Matthias Köckert•ARTICLE•Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel•2014

By means of specific texts (i.e. Gen 12:1-4a, 6, 8, 9; 13:1, 3-4, 14-17, 18b; 26:2-3bα, 23, 25aα; 27:29b; 28:13aα2-14; 33:18*, 20; 35:1, 6*, 7), the older Jacob tradition was joined with the Abraham and Lot narrative, thereby resulting in the formation of a story of the fathers. This story was available for the writer(s) of the Priestly source, though it originated around the same time and in a different environment in the Persian period.

  • Glaube« und »Gerechtigkeit« in Gen 15,6

    Matthias Köckert•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Theologie und…•2012

The Masoretic text in Gen 15:6, which is more open but older than the Septuagint, has led to various new interpretations (Oeming, Mosis, Rottzoll, Willi-Plein etc.). From a philological standpoint however these are not convincing. Thus the fact remains that YHWH credits Abraham's faith. However this sentence, which consists of two complementary parts, does not reflect the replacement of cultic achievements or »works« by faith (von Rad). In fact G…

  • Ausgespäht und überwacht, erschreckend wunderbar geschaffen

    Matthias Köckert•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Theologie und…•2010

In the early Hellenistic period, the author of Ps 139 articulates for the first time the insight that God has known him in his individuality from the beginning of the world. This insight changes his attitude to God fundamentally from verses 1-6 through verses 7-18 and then to verses 19-24.

  • Vom Kultbild Jahwes zum Bilderverbot. Oder

    Matthias Köckert•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Theologie und…•2009

Mentioning the calf in Bethel, 1 Kgs 12 presupposes a cultic image of Yhwh in the Northern Kingdom. The argument in Dtn 4 suggest an anthropomorphic image of Yhwh in the temple of Yerushalem. The location of the cherubim in 1 Kgs 6 and the Phoenician material in comparison point to the image of an enthronement. Image interdiction, in this case the ban on the cultic image of Yhwh, developed after the image of Yhwh was lost due to the destruction o…

  • Leben in Gottes Gegenwart

    Matthias Köckert•BOOK•Leben in Gottes Gegenwart•2004
