SETinSTONE: An impact assessment of the human and environmental resource requirements of Late Bronze Age Mycenaean monumental architecture
Mycenaean monumental architecture has been well studied. Yet the extent to which large-scale building programmes may have contributed to change and crises in Late Bronze Age Greece (c. 1600-1100/1070 BC) has never been investigated using actual field data. The aim of the SETinSTONE project is to assess if and how monumental building activities in Late Bronze Age Greece affected the political and socio-economic structures of Mycenaean polities, an…
People and plants: Piecing together archaeological and archaeobotanical data to reconstruct plant use and craft activities in Mycenaean Tiryns
Archaeobotanical data are often employed to reconstruct a site’s or a region’s palaeoecology, human use of plants such as agricultural regimes, and the interplay between vegetation and anthropogenic factors in the palaeoenvironment. This paper aims to show that a context-specific integration of such data helps to guide the focus beyond the macroscale and may thus add significantly to the reconstruction of microscale activity areas. New archaeobot…

Knowledge Networks and Craft Traditions in the Ancient World: Material Crossovers
A moving story about exotica: Objects’ long-distance production chains and associated identities at Tiryns, Greece
Studying materials through a chaîne opératoire approach is common practice in studying craft activities. Whilst unravelling a chain of production can be very rewarding, many issues still arise: can all the steps be captured even when no material evidence is present, i.e. how can we approach production chains in the case of inconsistently or partially preserved material in settlement contexts? How may the steps that we are able to observe be conte…
The Chicken or the Egg?’ Interregional Contacts Viewed Through a Technological Lens at L ate B ronze A ge T iryns, G reece
This paper reviews the environmental circumstances of the ostrich and its eggs, in order to provide a geographical overview of past human usage and modification of ostrich eggshells in the A egean and, more specifically, at T iryns, while placing this craft in its contemporary context in the L ate B ronze A ge M editerranean basin. This ostrich shell evidence from T iryns is contextualized and analysed through the approach of the chaîne opératoir…
