Late Holocene Landscape Use, Site Seasonality, and Settlement Patterns in San Francisco, California
Ancient Fishing Strategies for the Extinct Thicktail Chub ( Gila crassicauda ) in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta
Now extinct, Thicktail chub (Gila crassicauda) was endemic to central California and was a key component of local fisheries before the 1800s. Little is known about their biology, behavior, ecology, or role in precontact Native American fisheries. Archaeological sites contain large numbers of thicktail chub bones and represent a key source of data to fill our considerable gap in knowledge. We developed regression equations to convert thicktail chu…
Fallback foods and foraging demographics in early Thule diets
Zooarchaeological Analysis of a Late Holocene Multicomponent Village Site near Shaktoolik, Norton Sound, Alaska
Artifact and settlement data suggest that precolonial subsistence strategies in northwestern Alaska went through an economic transition with increased importance placed on local fish and small game between AD 1400 and AD 1500. From a North American Arctic perspective, this process has been defined as “regionalization.” Here, we present results from a zooarchaeological analysis of over 31,700 faunal remains from the Shaktoolik Airport Site (NOB-07…
Stable isotopes demonstrate the importance of freshwater fisheries in Late Holocene native Californian diets in the California Delta
Estimating paleodiet from macroscopic faunal and floral remains alone is difficult. Taphonomic biases make direct quantitative comparisons of different categories, such as fish bone, ungulate bone, and charred seeds challenging. Stable isotope data can help in this regard. To highlight this process, we present new bone collagen stable isotope data (δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S) from a series of animal and human remains from a Late Holocene (ca. 1000–300 …
Use of archaeological data in retracing diet and growth of extirpated fish populations in the California Delta
Small game, estuaries, and nets
Norton culture (ca. 740 BC–AD 1000) sites are ubiquitous across the western Arctic. Based on artifact and settlement data, it is generally agreed that Norton culture south of Seward Peninsula possessed a mixed marine-focused economy dominated by seasonally available Pacific salmon. However, the few direct studies of Norton subsistence, thus far, have suggested an emphasis on marine mammals rather than salmon. We present the results of a zooarchae…
Recent Archaeological Investigations near the Native Village of Shaktoolik, Norton Sound, Alaska + Supplementary Appendix 1 (See Article Tools)
Since the early 1950s, when J.L. Giddings completed his work at Cape Denbigh, archaeological investigations in the area of Shaktoolik, Alaska, have been limited. Here we report on renewed investigations in the region that have led to the identification of 134 house features, dating from AD 1100 to the early 1900s, at a site next to the village’s airport. This period spans one of continuity from the Nukleet archaeological culture to the ethnograph…
