Chicago’s bureau of detectives’ area technology centers – An exploratory case study of hidden values
An exploratory case study was conducted on the Area Technology Centers (ATCs) in the Chicago Police Department. We investigated direct and indirect impacts of the organizational transformation on the homicide investigations. Contribution: A semester-long, open-ended design project was implemented to promote intellectual development of first-year students while reinforcing event-driven/procedural programming principles. This paper describes this approach, and an evaluation strategy using Perry's model for intellectual development. The Chicago Police Department's Strategic Decision Support Centers (SDSCs) serve as command, control, and communications hubs for staff to gain awareness of what is happening in their districts and decide on responses. In this report, the authors evaluate the processes, organizational structures, and technologies employed in the SDSCs. They also assess the extent to which the introduction of SDSCs was associated with reductions in crime levels
