  • Reported Neighborhood Traffic and the Odds of Asthma/Asthma-Like Symptoms

Open Access•Sarah Commodore, Pamela L Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Asthma in children poses a significant clinical and public health burden. We examined the association between reported neighborhood traffic (a proxy for traffic-related air pollution) and asthma among 855 multi-racial children aged 4-8 years old who participated in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohort. We hypothesized that high neighborhood traffic density would be associated with the prevalence of asthma. Asthma/as…

  • Spatial Environmental Modeling of Autoantibody Outcomes among an African American Population

Open Access•Rachel Carroll, Anna Lawson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

In this study of autoimmunity among a population of Gullah African Americans in South Carolina, the links between environmental exposures and autoimmunity (presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA)) have been assessed. The study population included patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (n = 10), their first degree relatives (n = 61), and unrelated controls (n = 9) where 47.5% (n = 38) were ANA positive. This paper presents the methodology use…

  • Engaging a Chemical Disaster Community

Open Access•Winston E Abara, Winston Abara et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Community engagement remains a primary objective of public health practice. While this approach has been adopted with success in response to many community health issues, it is rarely adopted in chemical disaster response. Empirical research suggests that management of chemical disasters focuses on the emergency response with almost no community engagement for long-term recovery. Graniteville, an unincorporated and medically underserved community…

  • Respiratory symptoms and lung function 8–10 months after community exposure to chlorine gas

Open Access•Kathleen A Clark, Debjani Chanda et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Eight to ten months after acute chlorine exposure, the Graniteville health screening participants under-reported respiratory symptoms when compared to abnormal spirometry results. Sensitivity and specificity were low, and we determined that relying upon the self-report questionnaire was not adequate to objectively assess the lung health of our population following irritant gas exposure

  • Building Community Research Capacity

  • Characterizing Latino Anglers' Environmental Risk Perceptions, Sport Fish Consumption, and Advisory Awareness

    Open Access•Gregory P Beehler, Bridget M Mcguinne et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 26

Sport fish advisories for the Great Lakes states suggest limiting consumption offish taken from the lakes and their tributaries because of chemical contamination. It appears, however, that minority anglers are less aware of the advisories and also consume greater amounts of sport fish than white anglers. We conducted focus groups in western New York with Latino anglers and partners of anglers to explore these patterns. Analysis revealed that olde…

  • Polluted Fish, Sources of Knowledge, and the Perception of Risk

    Gregory P Beehler, Bridget M McGuinness et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2001

Risk reduction advisories exist for the Great Lakes because exposure to chemicals in sport fish could lead to adverse health effects in sport fish consumers. Concern has focused on minority anglers who consume more sport fish than white anglers. To determine the fishing and sport fish consumption context, including concepts of pollution and perceptions of risk, focus groups were conducted with African American anglers in western New York. Anglers…
