Magnus Hirschfeld’s 1899 psychobiological questionnaire
The first scientific questionnaire to establish gender and sexual “intermediate” identities “objectively” was published in 1899 by the internationally renowned sexologist and pioneer of LGBTI emancipation, Magnus Hirschfeld (1868–1935). In this article, I show that this questionnaire changed how interactions took place between psycho-medical professionals and people who did not conform to sexual or gender norms. Child Separation
Children were central to Dutch and Belgian colonial projects. Children and youth were the objects of colonial interventions issued by missionaries and officials. However, children could also become actors who produced change in a colonial context. A microanalysis of Hagen's facial atlas revea…
Touch in anthropometry
Starting from the idea that race is an assemblage, the author investigates two instances of touch in anthropometry. Firstly, the detailed instructions for mechanized measurements of “the living”. Second, the practices involved in actual measurements of Papuans in Dutch New Guinea during two expeditions in 1903 and 1909

Hermaphrodites on Show. The case of Katharina/Karl Hohmann and its Use in Nineteenth-century Medical Science
Katharina/Karl Hohmann was one of the most famous European hermaphrodites who demonstrated herself both to a general public and to academic medical doctors around 1870. Dozens of extensive medical reports discussed her case at the time. There has been said a significant amount already about the ethical questions of freak shows and the exposure of hermaphrodites to expert's eyes. But why were academic medical professionals at the time so eager to …
