Shoot the Boer’ – Hate Speech, Law and the Expediency of Sound
In recent years, “Shoot the Boer” (“Dubul’ ibhunu”), a well-known protest song from the apartheid era, experienced an unexpected revival in the streets of South Africa—and the courts. The article traces the history of the intersection of the song and the law as it meandered through an intricate topography of cases, rules and regulations ranging from the common-law crime of high treason, apartheid “anti-terrorism” and “anti-communism” law, post-ap…
"Acoustic Space" - Marshall McLuhan Defended Against Himself
After a spectacular rise over two decades Sound Studies appears to be at a crossroads. Many of its taken-for-granted epistemological assumptions regarding the givenness of a particular domain such as “hearing” or “sound” have become debatable. Marshall McLuhan’s largely forgotten concept of “acoustic space” and its complex relationship with the unconscious offers an opportunity to explore alternatives to sensed, emplaced sound as the normative ep…

Descartes's Resonant Subject
Almost four centuries after his death, René Descartes remains one of the most reviled figures in the history of Western thought. Whether as the father of the "modernist visualist paradigm" (Martin Jay) or the main instigator of a "masculinization of thought" (Susan Bordo), intellectual historians, students of sound, and feminists tend to dismiss the philosopher's work as incompatible with the critical agenda they espouse. Yet there exists a surpr…

Music, Modernity, and the Global Imagination: South Africa and the West
How do Western images of Africa and African representations of the West mirror each other? In this study, Veit Erlmann seeks to illuminate the complex issues involved in the making of modern identities in Africa, Europe, and the United States, through an examination of two striking episodes in the history of black South African music: the tours of two black South African choirs in England and America in the 1890s, and a series of engagements with…
Music, modernity, and the global imagination: South Africa and the West
"How was Africa seen by the West during the colonial period? How do Europeans and Americans conceive of Africa in today's postcolonial era? Such questions have preoccupied anthropologists, historians, and literary scholars for years. But few have asked the reverse: how did - and do - Africans see Europe and the United States? Fewer still have wondered how Western images of Africa and African representations of the West might mirror one another.".…

The Past Is Far and the Future Is Far: Power and performance among Zulu migrant workers
The study of isicathamiya, a tradition of competitive song and dance among Zulu migrant workers in South Africa, shows that performance is not necessarily a coherent expressive system with an underlying unitary organizing principle. The rich symbolic overlay in this tradition constitutes a performative, empowering strategy. It mediates migrant workers' ambiguous experience of alienation and powerless-ness by framing social interaction in spheres …

Africa civilised, Africa uncivilised: Local culture, world system and South African music
The paper examines two episodes in the production of music in South Africa. The first was by the South African Choir to England in 1891–92, a group whose performances were full of images that were both modern and local, and perceived by audiences of the times as confus‐ingly 'civilised and uncivilised'. The second episode was the making of Paul Simon's Graceland, which involved the collaboration of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo choir and has been s…

On a Saturday night of January 1930 several thousand African men clad in loin cloths and the calico uniforms of domestic servants thronged a concert in the Workers' Hall of the Durban branch of the Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union (ICU) in Prince Edward Street. To the pounding sounds of hundreds of sticks, successive teams of dancers, some of them trained by Union officials from the rural hinterland, rushed to the stage performing the vir…

Breakout: Profiles in African Rhythm
Based on exclusive interviews, Breakout tells the often riveting personal stories of fourteen popular musicians--some well known, others not--from Zaire, Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. The first book on African pop music to look closely at the lives of the musicians themselves, Breakout deals with four African musical genres: soukous, highlife, afro-beat, and palm wine. Amid Africa's deepening economic and political crises of the last two decad…
