  • Mothers' Hopes and Domestic Magic

    Open Access•Jong Bum Kwon•ARTICLE•Journal for the Anthropology of…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 40

This article is a collaborative ethnographic examination of the formation of white, middle-class, suburban mothers' subjectivities and mothers' roles in the reproduction of racial inequity and structural violence. We focus on their affective labors transforming home spaces and suburban landscapes into white fantasies of childhood, which we describe as kind of domestic magic. We argue at the heart of this white racial habitus is the figure of the …

  • Paradoxes of white moral experience

    Open Access•Jong Bum Kwon•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2020•Cited by: 9

Protesters at Canfield Green Apartments in Ferguson, August 14, 2014. (Lindy Drew) Racism is an evil, a willful lie, and simply immoral. Eva wrote this to me in an email the day after our second conversation.1 Eva is one of many white mothers who volunteered to speak with me about their growing understanding and experience of their whiteness. I met her through a program aimed at raising racial awareness among white people; I was following a few s…

  • Troubling whiteness

    Open Access•Jong Bum Kwon•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2020•Cited by: 1

Protest at Keiner Plaza, downtown St. Louis, November 25, 2014. (Lindy Drew) High in the tower, where I sit above the loud complaining of the human sea, I know many souls that toss and whirl and pass, but none there are that intrigue me more than the Souls of White Folk. Perhaps at no other time in modern American history have white people been more fascinated (and anxiety-ridden) about their own whiteness. President Obama's election in 2008 appe…

  • Anthropologies of Unemployment

Jong Bum Kwon, Carrie M Lane•EDITOR•BOOK•Anthropologies of Unemployment•2016

Anthropologies of Unemployment offers accessible, theoretically innovative, and ethnographically rich examinations of unemployment in rural and urban regions across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

  • Severed in neoliberal South Korea

    Open Access•Jong Bum Kwon•ARTICLE•Critique of Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 39

Unemployment hurts. Based on fieldwork with laid-off Daewoo autoworkers in South Korea in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis (1997-2001), a tumultuous transitional period from the developmental state to post-Fordist neoliberal economy, I explore their experience and interpretation of bodily pain and suffering. The term they used is severed which while idiomatic, suggests actual corporeal violence. Pivoting around the analysis of cho ̆ngd…

  • Forging a Modern Democratic Imaginary

    Jong Bum Kwon•ARTICLE•positions asia critique•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 17

This article examines the formation of “Neo-Korea” —the constitution of the social and political imaginary of the present as a radical break from the dark past. Democracy and neoliberalism, dominant imaginaries of contemporary Korea, required forgetting. This article shows how new tactics of policing protest initiated in 2000, in the still-churning wake of the financial crisis, actively reprogrammed social memory, dramatizing a Korea of democracy…
