The Future of South Korean–U.S. Security Relations
America's Strategy-Resource Mismatch
In order to defend itself and its national interests, and to maintain the trust of allies as a reliable security guarantor, the United States must match its national security policies with the resources available to support them. This report discusses the specific gaps between the stated strategic and defense policies of the United States and the resources and capabilities that would be required to implement those policies successfully.
Gaining Competitive Advantage in the Gray Zone
In this report, the authors examine how the United States might respond to Russian and Chinese efforts to seek strategic advantage through coercive actions in the gray zone. They use insights from their extensive field research and general research on the gray zone phenomenon to sketch out the elements of a strategic response to the gray zone challenge and develop a menu of response options for U.S. officials to consider.
Four Problems on the Korean Peninsula
North Korea's ongoing development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles increases the possibility of their use against regional states, furthering instability across the region and beyond. This toolkit provides visualizations illuminating four Korea-related problems: North Korea's nuclear arsenal, North Korean artillery systems, evacuating South Korean population centers, and securing North Korean nuclear weapons and facilities
Hostile Social Manipulation
The practitioners of hostile social manipulation employ social media, sophisticated forgeries, cyberbullying and harassment, distribution of rumors and conspiracy theories, and other tools to cause damage to their target state. This report represents an effort to better define and understand the challenge by focusing on the activities of the two leading authors of such techniques — Russia and China
The Emerging Risk of Virtual Societal Warfare
The evolution of advanced information environments is rapidly creating a new category of possible cyberaggression that involves efforts to manipulate or disrupt the information foundations of the effective functioning of economic and social systems. RAND researchers are calling this growing threat virtual societal warfare in an analysis of its characteristics and implications for the future
Leap of Faith
Leap of Faith is the first comprehensive and objective history of the decision to invade Iraq. Mike Mazarr shows how the most impressive and experienced foreign policy team made the greatest strategic folly of the century
The Korean Peninsula
This perspective summarizes detailed analytical work on the growing operational and strategic implications of a large, survivable North Korean nuclear force; the operational challenges of North Korean artillery and related capabilities that can threaten Seoul from the Kaesong Heights; and the operational and diplomatic issues attendant to a potential mission to secure loose nuclear weapons after a North Korean collapse.
Understanding the Emerging Era of International Competition
The new era of intensifying global competition is characterized by rivalry in the political, economic, and military spheres. This report summarizes findings of a study about the character of the emerging era of international competition. It is the first of three reports that examines the nature of that competition; evaluates its military, economic, geopolitical, and informational components; and assesses the perspectives of the major powers.
