Do potentially traumatic events experienced by people in one's social circle affect one's own mental health and emotional support? Findings from a prospective population-based study
BACKGROUND: Adults may have individuals in their social circle who were recently exposed to potentially traumatic events (PTEs). The present study aims to examine if these adults are at increased risk for mental health problems and reduced emotional support. METHODS: Data was extracted from annual surveys of the prospective VICTIMS-study (2018-2025), conducted with the Dutch population-based LISS panel. We selected adult respondents who participa…
An Investigation of the Longitudinal Bidirectional Associations Between Interactive Versus Passive Social Media Behaviors and Youth Internalizing Difficulties. A Within-Person Approach
Ongoing concerns about the mental health of young people have intensified interest in the role of social media, with research suggesting that the nature of social media behaviors-whether interactive or passive-may differentially impact mental health. However, the bidirectional relationships between specific types of social media use and internalizing difficulties (anxiety and depression) remain underexplored, particularly at the within-person lev…
The Influence of the Big Five Personality Factors on Mental Health Before and During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The Big Five personality factors (PF) are considered to be predictive of mental health problems, but it is unclear if these factors equally contributed to mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to before the pandemic. This prospective study aimed to fill this knowledge gap. For this purpose data was extracted from the population-based LISS-panel. We included adult respondents (N males = 1,838, N females = 1892) who participa…
To what extent do post-traumatic mental health and other problems reflect pre-existing problems? Findings from the prospective comparative population-based Victims-study
Background: Findings from prospective studies question the assumption that mental health problems observed in traumatized adults mainly reflect the effects of potentially traumatic events. Aims: Aim of the present comparative prospective study is to clarify the extent to which victims of potentially traumatic events with mental health, social, financial, and/or legal problems, already suffered from such problems before these events. Method: Data …
Do initial mental health, somatic, and social problems predict postdisaster lack of social support in the medium term? A latent profile analysis
Affected adults who belong to the subclinical to severe clinical classes in the first weeks suffered more often from a lack of social support 1.5 years postevent than did others. Mental health policies should target the risk of lack of social support among these groups. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
Sleep characteristics across the lifespan in 1.1 million people from the Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States
The experience of sudden loss of a colleague or neighbor following the MH17 plane crash in the Ukraine
The interviews indicate a "hierarchy of bereavement". As such, colleagues and neighbors may experience loneliness and/or isolation. Generally, there is no need to consult a practitioner, despite the experience of health complaints such as intrusive dreaming and lack of sleep
Longitudinal associations of psychological resilience with mental health and functioning among military personnel
Mental Health Problems Among Whistleblowers
Whistleblowers play a very important and indispensable role in society and health care sector, but their act may elicit retaliation and other negative effects, which may impact their mental health. The main aim of the present comparative study is to assess to what extent whistleblowers ( N = 27) more often suffer from severe mental health problems than other population-based groups in the Netherlands, i.e., matched controls ( N = 135), cancer pat…
Cross-lagged associations between posttraumatic stress symptoms and coping self-efficacy in long-term recovery
The predictive value of trauma-related coping self-efficacy for posttraumatic stress symptoms
Pretreatment CSE did not affect recovery during treatment: higher pretreatment CSE perceptions do not give treated individuals an advantage while CSE is predictive of PTSS among untreated victims
Longitudinal interplay between posttraumatic stress symptoms and coping self-efficacy
Late-onset posttraumatic stress disorder following a disaster
In disaster survivors, the occurrence of mental health problems beyond the immediate aftermath of the disaster has repeatedly been reported. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the course of symptoms and mental health services (MHS) utilization in late-onset posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) four years following a disaster and to examine whether late-onset PTSD can be explained within a longitudinal framework of PTSD. Residents affect…
Confrontations with aggression and mental health problems in police officers
Background\nThe extent to which the frequency of facing aggression incidents is associated with mental health problems among police officers when organizational stressors, life-events, and previous mental health problems are taken into account is unclear.\n\nAim\nTo elucidate this data from a longitudinal study of police officers was analyzed (N = 473). Mental health problems (MHPs) are here defined as severe anxiety, depression, hostility, burno…
Disaster-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Physical Health
Objective: To examine the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and self-reported as well as physician-recorded physical health in a sample of survivors (n = 896) of a man-made disaster, using a longitudinal design that included predisaster health data. Most studies on the relationship between PTSD and physical health are cross-sectional and use self-reported physical health outcomes. Methods: A surveillance using the electron…
Use of mental health services among disaster survivors
This study showed that several demographic and disaster-related variables and self-reported and physician diagnosed health problems predicted post-disaster MHS-use. The most important factors to predict post-disaster MHS utilization were disaster intrusions and avoidance reactions and symptoms of hostility (which can be identified as symptoms of PTSD) and pre-disaster chronic diseases
Post-Disaster Mental Health Problems and the Utilization of Mental Health Services
This study examined mental health problems and mental health services (MHS) utilization after a fireworks disaster among adult survivors and a comparison group. The disaster took place on May 13, 2000, in the city of Enschede, The Netherlands. Victims (N=662) participated in a survey 2-3 weeks (T1), 18 months (T2) and 4 years (T3) post-disaster. The comparison group consisted of non-affected people from another city (N=526). They participated at …
Health-related quality of life and mental health problems after a disaster
Multigenerational Perspectives on Coping with the Holocaust Experience
In this paper, we advance a new approach to the intergenerational transmission of Holocaust experiences, by focusing on attachment theory. The approach is used as a framework for interpretation of the results of three studies on Holocaust survivors and their offspring, from different countries (The Netherlands, Canada, and Israel), and based on different conceptual approaches and methods of data collection (quantitative as well as qualitative). T…
