Job satisfaction of foreign-born women employed in personal care and household services
Using the ad hoc module of the 2021 Italian Labour Force Survey, this study provides a nuanced and comparative analysis of job satisfaction among foreign-born women employed in Personal care and Household Services (PHS). Regression models show that foreign-born women employed in PHS do not report lower levels of job satisfaction than their native counterpart. Work-related characteristics associated with job satisfaction, however, differ between t…
Lyceum and university aspirations among migrants and non‐migrants in Italy
Scholars have argued that, on average, immigrant students are ‘optimists’ and have higher educational aspirations than non‐migrant students after accounting for students' socio‐economic background and educational performance. However, ethnic minority groups, which proxy the different origin backgrounds of migrants, may show mixed findings in terms of educational aspirations. This study aims to analyse the lyceum (the most theoretical school in It…
Fertility Intentions Within a 3-Year Time Frame
The body of literature on the fertility of migrants in Europe has grown significantly in recent decades. The focus has mostly been on analysing their actual behaviours, and reflection on other crucial aspects extensively analysed in studies on natives has been lacking. In particular, differences between migrants’ reproductive decision-making process and that of natives are currently understudied in the European context. We will focus on the assoc…
The academic resilience of native and immigrant-origin students in selected European countries
Socio-economic disadvantaged students are not equally vulnerable: some of them are defined as ‘resilient’ students because they are able to ‘beat the odds’ and achieve positive academic outcomes. Using data from the last two editions (2015 and 2018) of OECD-Programme for International Students Assessment, we aim to analyse the academic resilience (i.e. the 25% most socio-economically disadvantaged students who achieve an adequate level of profici…
Breaking down the barriers
The goal of successfully incorporating ethnic minorities represents a decisive challenge for modern societies. However, migratory background continues to negatively affect the life trajectories of migrants’ descendants. ‘Hard’ and ‘soft’ barriers determine long-term inequality gaps and low intergenerational social mobility in both longstanding and more recent European immigration countries. This special issue complements the sparse findings on ed…
Demographic trends in less and least developed countries
Many scholars share the assumption that demographic patterns in the world are converging over time. The present study analyses the temporal trends of specific parameters of mortality and fertility—together with certain socio-economic indicators—in 95 less and least developed countries during the period 1990–2015 and discusses whether mortality and fertility trends are convergent or divergent. We apply dynamic factor analysis and cluster analysis …
Migrants’ Fertility in Italy
Living arrangements of adult children of immigrants in selected European countries
The living arrangements of adult children of immigrants are shaped across Europe by both the dominant norms of mainstream society and the intergenerational transmission of values and practices
Histories of Couple Formation and Migration
Migrant families have become relevant in Italy during the past decade and Lombardy is one of the Italian regions with the largest foreign presence. The aim of the article is to contribute to the international debate on the relationship between couple formation and migration event. Using data from the 2010 ORIM ( Osservatorio Regionale sull'Immigrazione e la Multietnicità) sample survey and event history techniques, we look at the main determinant…
Motherhood of foreign women in Lombardy
The international literature highlights the strong impact of the high risk of childbearing shortly after migration on period fertility, thus establishing a link between reproductive behaviors and migratory transitions

International Married and Unmarried Unions in Italy
As a result of the growing presence of foreign immigrants settling in Italy, recent years have seen a significant increase in the number of mixed unions. However, little research has been carried out on the subject in this country, in part due to insufficient availability of suitable data. The aim of this study is to investigate the “market” of formal and informal mixed unions and to understand whether ethnic origin contributes a new element to t…
Just a Matter of Time? The Ways in Which the Children of Immigrants become Similar (or not) to Italians
In this paper, we study similarities between the children of immigrants and those of Italian parents using data from the Itagen2, a survey of a large sample of pupils, aged 11–13, enrolled in Italian junior high schools in 2006. We measure three different aspects—linguistic abilities, friendship with peers, and sense of belonging in Italy—and investigate the determinants of similarity using multivariate techniques. Our results suggest that the It…
Italy’s Non-Negligible Cohabitational Unions
Italy has long been regarded as the country with negligible non-marital cohabitation par excellence, but lately the pattern has begun to change and entry into consensual unions has increased strongly in younger Italian generations. This article is devoted to a study of such features between 1980 and 2003 based on the data from the Italian variant of the Gender and Generations Survey, Round 1. We consider entry into marriage and entry into cohabit…
Levels of recent union formation
We offer a comparison between the age profiles of risks of formation of marital and non-marital unions in Russia, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Italy. We show that there is considerable variability across these populations in the level and ag
Italy’s Path to Very Low Fertility
The deep drop of the fertility rate in Italy to among the lowest in the world challenges contemporary theories of childbearing and family building. Among high-income countries, Italy was presumed to have characteristics of family values and female labor force participation that would favor higher fertility than its European neighbors to the north. We test competing economic and cultural explanations, drawing on new nationally representative, long…
The impact of origin region and internal migration on Italian fertility
We examine the impact of population distribution on fertility in a nationally representative sample. We exploit detailed life-history data to conduct an event-history analysis of transition to first birth, examining mechanisms that might link migration
