  • Ecology of Tropical Rainforests and Land Use in Northern Congo, Central Africa

    Open Access•Hiroyoshi Chujo•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•1997

To clarify secondary succession on the sites of abandoned cultivation, an ecological study was conducted on the regrowth vegetation of different age and natural high forests in the tropical rainforest zone of northern Congo in central Africa. Sample plots were taken in areas 0.5, 6.5, 11.5, 13.5 and 18.5 years after their first cultivation. From the phytosociological study, the Chromolaena odorata community (Herb and shrub stages) and the Musanga…

  • Ecology of the Tropical Semi-deciduous Forest and its Possibility of the Sustaining Use in East Cameroon, West Africa

    Open Access•Hiroyoshi Chujo•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•1992

To clarify the savannization mechanism of tropical rain forests, I conducted this ecological study of the semi-deciduous forest and its soils in the forest-savanna contact zone in East Cameroon. The soil under the semi-deciduous forest belonged to the typical type of ferrallitic soil. An investigation on the forest vegetation revealed the scanty regeneration in the semi-deciduous forest. Then, I considered that this forest lasts only for a single…

  • Tropical Rain Forests and the Annual Rainfall in South Cameroon, West Africa

    Open Access•Hiroyoshi Chujo•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•1989

In the tropical rain forest of South Cameroon, West Africa, the annual rainfall drastically decreases in a narrow area at c. 70km from the coast. To clarify the relationship between the annual rainfall and forest vegetation, I conducted this ecological study of the vegetation. As the result, it became clear that the tropical evergreen forest is distributed in the area of more than 2000mm of the rainfall, the transitional forest (1) in 2000-1700mm…
