Communication Disparities between Nursing Home Team Members
Optimal care in nursing home (NH) settings requires effective team communication. Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) interact with nursing home residents frequently, but the extent to which CNAs feel their input is valued by other team members is not known. We conducted a cross-sectional study in which we administered a communication survey within 20 Utah nursing home facilities to 650 team members, including 124 nurses and 264 CNAs. Respondents…
The transformation of the meaning of death in complicated grief group therapy for survivors of suicide: A treatment process analysis using the meaning of loss codebook
We examined the therapeutic process of grief change in survivors of suicide participating in complicated grief group therapy (CGGT) using the meaning of loss codebook (MLC). Complicated grief group therapy is a multimodal group psychotherapy designed to restore normal grieving in persons with complicated grief. Using video data, we evaluated transition points in psychotherapy associated with meaning reconstruction: retelling the narrative of the …
Weaving Interdisciplinary and Discipline-Specific Content into Palliative Care Education: One Successful Model for Teaching End-of-Life Care
While palliative care is best delivered in an interdisciplinary format, courses teaching the interdisciplinary approach to palliative care are rare in healthcare education. This article describes a graduate-level course in palliative care for students in nursing, pharmacy, social work, and gerontology taught by faculty from each discipline. The overarching goals of this course are to convey core palliative care knowledge across disciplines, artic…
Personal loss in health professions graduate students: Implications for clinical education in bereavement
The impact of prior personal grief on the educational experience of health care graduate students participating as co-facilitators in bereavement support groups was examined in this study. Personal experience with the death of a family member or close friend was reported in 80% of participating students. Findings suggest that grief, and the students’ construction of the meaning of their loss, can mediate the students’ developing sense of self as …
Experiences of Veterans' Widows Following Conjugal Bereavement: A Qualitative Analysis
This qualitative study analyzed the conjugal grief experience of veterans' widows. The narratives yielded several themes, including the decreased self-reported symptoms of distress when widows reported having positive social support without negative social support, the development of an ongoing relationship with their deceased spouses with a mechanism for creating meaning from their loss, and the assumption of a new identity and new roles and res…
