Open Access•Laura Rawson, Frouke Hermens et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Psychology•2024

Negative attitudes toward offenders may hinder the rehabilitation process. The present study examines the relationship between attitudes toward sex offenders and stated acceptance of offenders and non‐offenders into various aspects of daily life. Sixty female members of the public (18–50 years old, UK residents, recruited by word of mouth and via social media) completed an attitudes towards sex offenders (ATS) scale and indicated for each of eigh…

  • The role of intuitive moral foundations in Britain's vote on EU membership

    Open Access•Craig A Harper, Todd E Hogue et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 6

In June 2016, British voters took part in a referendum on the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union (EU). By a margin of 52% to 48%, they voted to leave. Studies have demonstrated that fixed demographic factors were the best predictors of voting intentions in either direction, or that “leave” voters were driven by perceived threats from immigration. In this paper, we examine the role of moral intuitions in referendum voting intentions…

  • Self-disclosure with Dogs

    Aislinn S Evans-Wilday, Sophie S Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 50

Many owners talk to their pets about a wide range of issues, but there is very little research that has considered the content of this, or its impact on owner wellbeing. Verbal disclosure brings a range of potential health benefits, yet a number of factors may prevent individuals from confiding in their partners or friends (confidants). As such, in some circumstances, dogs may provide a more favorable alternative focus for disclosure. In a survey…

The relationships between the media, public attitudes, and crime are complex, with evidence suggesting that public interaction with these press reports influencing wider social and political attitudes. Here, 543 articles from 8 of the 10 most-read British national newspapers were examined in terms of their representativeness of crime rates, and their linguistic properties. Results include a 9:1 representation of sexual crime, a 2.5:1 representati…

  • A Prototype-Willingness Model of Sexual Crime Discourse in England and Wales

Open Access•Craig A Harper, Todd E Hogue et al.•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•2014

Dual-process models of decision making assume that we process information using two distinct ‘systems’: a deliberate and analytical system, and an intuitive system. This article uses 148 UK press articles about sexual crime to apply one such model – the ‘prototype-willingness’ model – to the study of social discourses about sexual crime in England and Wales. A small number of cases were significantly over-represented within the article sample (fo…
