  • Life the Hidden Template, Life Energy the Driving Force, Grounding the Action

    Ken Mellor•ARTICLE•Transactional Analysis Journal•2017

The author suggests that, in the aftermath of the proliferation of new personal change systems in the 1970s and 1980s, many practitioners concentrated on pathology and problems. This meant that some early transactional analysts missed the opportunity to explore the nature of physis (Berne, 1947) fully as a living force, including its origins and how to use it in everyday life. In this article, based on the author’s extensive exposure to Eastern t…

  • Autonomy with Integrity

    Ken Mellor•ARTICLE•Transactional Analysis Journal•2008

Using Eric Berne's description of autonomy as a starting point, this article presents a reorientation that places transactional analysis and some other psychological models in a broader context. Integrity, in relation to wholeness and morals and ethics, is seen as central to autonomy and a freeing force in people's lives. Awareness, spontaneity, and intimacy, Berne's original capacities, continue to play profoundly necessary parts in understandin…

  • Awareness and Discounting

Ritchie Macefield, Ken Mellor•ARTICLE•Transactional Analysis Journal•2006

In this article, two new tools are presented: the awareness-discounting matrix and the awareness action sequence. The first is a variant of the discounting matrix developed by Mellor and Schiff (1975); the second is completely new. Created for task-oriented and option-oriented functions–which occur in many contexts, particularly educational and commercial settings–the new developments are specifically designed to deal with the different emphases …

  • Impasses

    Ken Mellor•ARTICLE•Transactional Analysis Journal•1980

The three degrees of impasse developed by R. and M. Goulding are defined in development terms which relate to such factors as age, verbal and motor skills, discrimination, consciousness, etc. These terms integrate contributions from Primal Therapy, Reichian, and neo-Reichian approaches to the understanding of impasses. A specific locus of resolution for each degree of impasse is suggested. Several advantages are proposed for the employment of thi…

  • Reparenting the Parent in Support of Redecisions

Ken Mellor, Graham Andrewartha•ARTICLE•Transactional Analysis Journal•1980

Reparenting techniques are employed during Parent interviews (J. McNeel) to reparent the Parent ego state in order to provide support for redecisions made by the Child. Parent needs, wants, and feelings are identified and experienced to ensure that appropriate attention will be paid to them during the reparenting process. An annotated example of Parent reparenting is provided. Specific indications and examples of appropriate circumstances for the…

  • Reframing and the Integrated Use of Redeciding and Reparenting

    Ken Mellor•ARTICLE•Transactional Analysis Journal•1980

Reframing, designed to effect modification of the individual's frame of reference (J. Schiff), incorporates the reparenting approach of J. Schiff, and the redecision approach of the Gouldings. Specific steps of the reparenting approach and of the redecision approach are identified. Guidelines for the employment of reparenting and redecision within the reframing context are included. Examples of both the effective application and the non-effective…
