This paper offers a descriptive analysis of aspects of the Yawanawá and Hãtxa Kuĩ (Kaxinawá) grammars, as well as ethnographic issues concerning their communities. The Yawanawá language belongs to the Panoan family, and its speakers inhabit the region of the Gregório River, in the state of Acre, Brazil. Hãtxa Kuĩ, also known as Kaxinawá, is spoken by the Huni Kuĩ people, who also live in Acre. The study analyzes morphosyntactic inventories based …

  • Inverse system, agreement and distribution of clitics and free pronouns in Tenetehára

    Open Access•Fábio Bonfim Duarte•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Linguística…•2025

This paper focuses on the agreement system of the Tenetehára language in order to investigate how the person features are grammaticalized. The hypothesis proposed is that the occurrence of the person features on the verb morphology is regulated by the nominal hierarchy in which the [+participant] feature systematically outranks the [-participant] feature. As such, the transitive verbs will systematically agree with the argument that carries the […

Nessa persp…

A análise demo…

  • Differential Object Marking in Tukano

Open Access•Braulio Brandão De Oliveira Lopes, Fábio Bonfim Duarte•ARTICLE•Revista Letras•2021

The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the Tukano language exhibits differential object marking, hereafter DOM. It also assumes that the occurrence of the overt morphological Case marking {-re} has the role of indicating whether the internal argument is definite or not, thereby being responsible for activating DOM in Tukano. This hypothesis is based on the fact that this Case marker only appears in definite objects, never in indefi…

  • On the semantic properties of mass and count nouns in Guajajára (Tenetehára)

    Open Access•Pilar Chamorro, Fábio Bonfim Duarte•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 10

In this paper we show that Guajajára has grammaticalized the distinction between mass and count nouns, but that the coding of this distinction is different from the systems of coding in classifier languages, number-marking languages, and number-neutral languages (Chierchia 1998a, 1998b, 2010; Wilhelm 2008). As a result, we conclude that Guajajára presents a challenge to the tripartite classification of languages proposed in Chierchia's work, sinc…

  • The particle 'ke' as a differential object and subject marker in Ka'apor

    Open Access•Fábio Bonfim Duarte•ARTICLE•Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio…•2019•References: 6

The main purpose of this article is to show that the Ka'apor language exhibits both direct object marking (DOM) and differential subject marking (DSM). This research demonstrates that the particle ke is responsible for triggering these systems, since it is used when agent subjects are semantically affected by the event described by the verb and when objects are high on the animacy scale. In this sense, the DOM mechanism in Ka'apor is regulated by…

  • Antipassive structure in Tenetehára (Tupi-Guarani family)

Open Access•Fábio Bonfim Duarte, Quesler Fagundes Camargos et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Linguística…•2017•Cited by: 1

This article aims to describe and examine the antipassive construction in the Tenetehára language (Tupi-Guarani family). For this, it will be shown that the transitive verbs, on receiving the morpheme {puru-}, then exhibit the following properties of antipassive constructions: (i) they come to have an intransitive syntactic structure and (ii) the abstract Case of the internal argument is not valued by v, but by the postposition -ehe. Generally, s…

  • Tenetehára: A predicate-fronting language

    Open Access•Fábio Bonfim Duarte•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2012

This article investigates whether Tenetehára is a predicate-raising language. The purpose is to determine whether VSO order results from verb movement to the heads T 0 or C 0 only, or whether Tenetehára exhibits VP remnant movement, similarly to languages like Niuean, Choi, Malagasy, and Seediq. The analysis concludes that Tenetehára does allow predicate movement, to Spec-CP or Spec-TP. Either option depends on particles related to tense and comp…

This paper examines the Case and theta role assignment to DPs in theKa'apor language. Our hypothesis is that Ka'apor manifests a split Casesystem, which may be triggered either by the semantic nature of stativepredicates or by the DPs that receive the theta role "paciente/theme".In addition to this, we propose that the enclitic particle [.ke] may bedescribed as the (absolutive) Case and thematic role assignment toobject and to subject of unaccusa…
