  • Refined Classification System for Thermally Damaged Human Remains by Body Segment

Elayne Pope, Chelsey Juarez et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2022•Cited by: 1

This article provides a comprehensive regional approach to the classification of thermal damage of soft tissue and bone by assessing the body in segments, consisting of the head, torso, arms, and legs. The changes associated with each stage are generated from over 150 bodies over 12 years with the San Luis Obispo Fire Investigation Strike Team (SLO FIST), including photographs, video, and recorded statements. Each of the six stages represents a r…

  • An investigation of ancient Maya intentional dental modification practices at Midnight Terror Cave using anthroposcopic and paleogenomic methods

  • Implications of age and sex determinations of ancient Maya sacrificial victims at Midnight Terror Cave

    Open Access•C Verdugo, Kimberly Zhu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 39

The prurient element in the popular notion of the ancient Maya sacrifice of "beautiful virgins" during the first half of the 20th century appears to have made researchers wary of studying women in human sacrifice. Interest in human sacrifice arose in the 1990s along with the formulation of the warfare hypothesis for the collapse of Maya civilization so that models of human sacrifice often assumed that victims were largely male war captives. The p…

  • The evolving female

Adrienne L Zihlman, Alison Galloway et al.•BOOK•The evolving female•1997

"A human female is born, lives her life, and dies within the space of a few decades, but the shape of her life has been strongly influenced by 50 million years of primate evolution and more than 100 million years of mammalian evolution. How the individual female plays out the stages of her life -- from infancy, through the reproductive period, to old age -- and how these stages have been formed by a long evolutionary process, is the theme of this…

  • Bone mineral density and survival of elements and element portions in the bones of the Crow Creek massacre victims

Open Access•P Willey, Alison Galloway et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1997•References: 14

The interpretation of archaeologically-derived skeletal series is dependent on the elements and portions of elements preserved for examination. Bone and bone portion survival is affected by factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic to the elements themselves, that influence deterioration and preservation. Among the intrinsic variables, the density of the element and element portion are particularly important with respect to the degree of preservation…

  • Physical anthropology and the law

    Open Access•Alison Galloway, Walter H Birkby et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1990•Cited by: 4•References: 34

An understanding of the legal responsibilities which accompany involvement with forensic anthropology are essential prior to active participation in this field. Correct procedures of scene investigation, the requirements for handling and security of physical evidence, and the maintenance of a complete chain of custody are an obligation of all forensic scientists. The anthropologist as expert witness must also be cognizant of the implications of t…

  • Stature loss among an older United States population and its relation to bone mineral status

    Open Access•Alison Galloway, William A Stini et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1990•Cited by: 4•References: 14

Age‐related statural loss has been recorded but incompletely assessed in modern populations. In this study, data collected on stature during annual bone mineral assessments are analyzed for 1,024 Caucasian individuals from southern Arizona. Continued stabilization in reported maximum heights is seen in this population. With advancing age there is a gradual decrease in height apparently beginning in the mid‐40s. Thereafter, there is a relatively r…
