Learning from the Past, Teaching for the Future: A Forum
The Mark and Gail Appel Program in Holocaust and Antiracism Education: “Learning from the Past, Teaching for the Future” (TFTF) is a tri-national program that brings students from Canada, Germany, and Poland to sites of Holocaust memory to focus on the history, experience, representation, and memorialization of the Holocaust and its implications for other instances of atrocity, racism, and genocide. This forum gathers five voices from the 2013-20…
Buried Words: A forum on sexuality, violence and Holocaust testimonies
This Forum is a discussion among six contributors deeply familiar with the challenges of analyzing survivor testimony, each with a distinct methodological approach to the topic of sexual violence and the Holocaust. Topics addressed in the discussion include the challenges posed by studying survivor testimonies to learn about sexual violence, the theme of silence and how scholars can mitigate the role they play in reinforcing it, how gender as a c…
The Detours Required’: Sarah Kofman and the ‘Black Milk’ of Hidden Children
Sarah Kofman’s belated memoir, Rue Order, Rue Labat, narrates the experiences of a hidden Jewish child in Paris, living out the war in a vexed relationship with two mothers – her biological mother, a Polish immigrant and wife of an Orthodox rabbi, on the one hand; and a Catholic French woman who saves them, on the other. Reading the memoir alongside literary reflections by other child survivors, such as Aharon Appelfeld and Louis Begley, the arti…
The Geography of Memory: Haunting and Haunted Landscapes in Contemporary Canadian Jewish Writing
The refrain “Every moment is two moments” in Anne Michaels’s 1997 novel Fugitive Pieces, an exploration of traumatized memory and post-memory, could serve as a leitmotif pointing to the complexity of memory and witnessing in contemporary Jewish Canadian fiction. In the memory novels of Michaels, Fugitive Pieces and The Winter Vault (2009), and of Nancy Richler, Your Mouth Is Lovely (2001) and The Imposter Bride (2012), every moment is not so much…
The Impact of Client Nonpayment on the Income of Contingent Workers: Evidence from the Freelancers Union Independent Worker Survey
The authors use the Freelancers Union's annual Independent Worker Survey (IWS) from 2007 to 2011, the union's administrative membership file, and the American Community Survey to estimate the extent to which client nonpayment of independent workers is a problem and the ability of a written contract to reduce the odds of nonpayment. They develop tests for nonresponse and sample selection biases, although due to a lack of instrumental variables and…

Mediating Judaism: Mind, Body, Spirit, and Contemporary North American Jewish Fiction
That Jewish literature in North America is an altogether secular venue has long been regarded as a truism among many influential literary scholars. Indeed, for much of the twentieth century, the fiction of Jewish immigrants and their progeny wrote its way into American and Canadian culture through narratives that captured the process of acculturation by distancing itself from Jewish traditional practices, construed mockingly or nostalgically as r…

Voicing the void: Muteness and memory in Holocaust fiction
Through new close readings of Holocaust fiction, this book takes the field of Holocaust Studies in an important new direction. Reading a wide range of narratives representing different nationalities, styles, genders, and approaches, Horowitz demonstrates that muteness not only expresses the difficulty in saying anything meaningful about the Holocaust - it also represents something essential about the nature of the event itself. The radical negati…
