The facial reconstruction of Dante Alighieri using linear cranial measurements to predict his missing mandible
The Presumed Skull of Athalaric, King of the Ostrogoths (Ad 516–534)
The "Luigi Cattaneo" Museum of Anatomical Waxes of the University of Bologna houses a skull (Figure 1a, 3D virtual reconstruction Figure 1d) labelled as Skull of Athalaric, King of the Ostrogoths (Cranio di Atalarico, Re degli Ostrogoti), which represents the object of the present analysis, aimed at assessing the genuineness of the attribution as well as the health status of this individual. To achieve this goal, a multidisciplinary approach incl…
A multifaceted approach towards investigating childbirth deaths in double burials
Pope Leo XII’s death
1829 after a short illness, particularly struck the public. Suspicions of poisoning or surgeon's guilt or inexperience and even the shadow of a venereal disease, contributed to create a "black legend" on his pontificate and death. On the contrary, the present paleopathographic analysis points toward a new conclusion. The regular use of catheterization with a silver syringe provided an easy access for bacterial superinfection, confirmed by the obs…
Multi-analytic study of a probable case of fibrous dysplasia (FD) from certosa monumental cemetery (Bologna, Italy)
The genetic legacy of the Yaghnobis
OBJECTIVES: The Yaghnobis are an ethno-linguistic minority historically settled along the Yaghnob River in the Upper-Zarafshan Valley in Tajikistan. They speak a language of Old Sogdian origin, which is the only present-day witness of the Lingua Franca used along the Silk Road in Late Antiquity. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the genetic history of this community in order to shed light on its isolation and genetic ancestry within the Eu…
Iron Age Italic population genetics
This study provides a preliminary characterisation of the mtDNA variability of the Piceni of Novilara, as well as a kinship assessment of two peculiar burials
The study of commingled non-adult human remains
A multianalytic investigation of weapon-related injuries in a Late Antiquity necropolis, Mutina, Italy
C 4 ‐Plant Foraging in Northern Italy
Human osteological samples ( n = 23) taken from different anatomical parts of 11 individuals from the early modern (16th–18th century AD) site of Roccapelago (Modena, Italy) were systematically analysed for δ 13 C, δ 15 N and trace elements to investigate their diet. δ 13 C and δ 15 N correlate and show a high variability between individuals, attesting to the dietary contribution of C 4 plants. This is supported by pollen analysis of the burial s…
Inferring chronological age from DNA methylation patterns of human teeth
We propose for the first time the evaluation of DNA methylation at ELOVL2, FHL2, and PENK genes as a powerful tool to predict age in modern teeth for anthropological applications. Future studies are needed to apply this method also to historical and relatively ancient human teeth
A reassessment of the presumed Torrener Bärenhöhle's Paleolithic human tooth
A hyper-realistic method for facial approximation
Frequently, identification of individuals is problematical due to the level of associated decomposition and even more when the skeletal remains are incomplete or fragmented. The identikit, which includes a sketch or a facial reconstruction, could assist investigators with determining the identity of the decedent. Similarly, in archeology and physical anthropology it gives a realistic appearance to a historical character known only through iconogr…
Technical Note
A very limiting factor for paleoanthropological studies is the poor state of preservation of the human fossil record, where fragmentation and deformation are considered normal. Although anatomical information can still be gathered from a distorted fossil, such specimens must typically be excluded from advanced morphological and morphometric analyses, thus reducing the fossil sample size and, ultimately, our knowledge of human evolution. In this c…
Technical Note
The study of enamel thickness has received considerable attention in regard to the taxonomic, phylogenetic and dietary assessment of human and non‐human primates. Recent developments based on two‐dimensional (2D) and three‐dimensional (3D) digital techniques have facilitated accurate analyses, preserving the original object from invasive procedures. Various digital protocols have been proposed. These include several procedures based on manual han…
Individual tooth macrowear pattern guides the reconstruction of Sts 52 ( Australopithecus africanus ) dental arches
The functional restoration of the occlusal relationship between maxillary and mandibular tooth rows is a major challenge in modern dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. Similar technical challenges are present in paleoanthropology when considering fragmented and deformed mandibular and maxillary fossils. Sts 52, an Australopithecus africanus specimen from Sterkfontein Member 4, represents a typical case where the original shape of the dental arche…
Cervical and crown outline analysis of worn Neanderthal and modern human lower second deciduous molars
Despite the general increase in digital techniques for dental morphometric analyses, only a few methods are available to study worn teeth. Moreover, permanent dentitions are studied much more frequently than deciduous teeth. In this study, we address both issues by providing a taxonomic classification of Neanderthal and modern human (MH) lower second deciduous molars (dm 2 s) through the analysis of crown and cervical outlines. Crown and cervical…
A reassessment of the Neanderthal teeth from Taddeo cave (southern Italy)
Virtual anthropology and forensic arts
Technical note
We report a procedure for the virtual reconstruction of incomplete human bones applicable to skeletal remains from archaeological excavations or to reconstructive and prosthetic surgery. To test the procedure, we reconstructed a fragmented left clavicle on the basis of the contralateral clavicle. The procedure involved 3‐D laser scanner acquisition of the left clavicle (complete but broken into two parts), the same manually reconstructed bone, an…
Improving the spatial orientation of human teeth using a virtual 3D approach
Report of three fused primary human teeth in an archaeological material
Fusion of deciduous teeth can appear in several ways, usually involving two teeth but occasionally three. The frequency of this anomaly is reported to be low and few cases have been described in the scientific literature. Fused teeth in the archaeological record are rare because of the destructive taphonomic processes to which bones and teeth are subjected. \nPrevious research in this field has only dealt with cases of two fused deciduous teeth. …

The effects of geographical and prolonged cultural isolation on the marital behaviour of an Alpine community (Valsesia-Italy, 1618–1899)
Monte Bibele
Pier Luigi Dall'Aglio, Gianni Giusberti, Giorgio Gruppioni, Daniele Vitali, Monte Bibele : aspetti archeologici antropologici e storici dell'insediamento preromano, p. 155-182.
Polymorphism of properdin factor B (Bf) in some Italian populations
In order to contribute to the definition of a map of the distribution of Bf polymorphism in Italy, we typed numerous population samples (for a total of 2033 individuals) from several regions of Italy: provinces of Bologna, Potenza and Matera, middle Sangro valley (Chieti) and northern, central and southern Sardinia. A new method was used which consisted of cellulose acetate electrophoresis followed by immunofixation and staining with Coomassie bl…
Analysis of the polymorphism of haptoglobins in Sardinia
The present study reports an analysis of the distribution of Hp polymorphism in Sardinia carried out on a sample of 871 individuals. The samples are examined according to the division by provinces and by historical-geographical regions. In both cases the phenotype Hp 2-1 has high frequency and a North-South trend. The Hp*1 is the most common gene in every part of Sardinia. In general the distribution of Hp in Sardinia is not significantly heterog…
Digital and palmar dermatoglyphics and the population structure of the Upper Bologna Apennine
Analysis of digital and palmar dermatoglyphics in an Italian mountain population was carried out. Dermatoglyphic variability was particularly investigated in samples from four different valleys. Microgeographical differences in qualitative and quantitative traits among valleys were found. The relationship between degree of endogamy and dermatoglyphic differences is discussed. The biological repercussion of isolation in the history of this Apennin…

Obesity and Blood Pressure in children
Estimates of relationships between blood pressures and anthropometric structure or body composition were made on a total sample of 414 children, taking age and sex into account. A subsample of 250 children was formed from obese (or slightly obese) subjects. A different pattern in anthropometric structure and body composition resulted in relation to a different degree of obesity. A canonical correlation analysis was carried out for each sex, in wh…
Study of somatotype in Italian children aged 6 to 10 years
The aim of the present research was to study the variations of somatotype, calculated by the Heath-Carter anthropometric technique, during growth in a sample of children (416 males and 402 females), aged 6 and 10 years, attending primary and secondary schools of L'Aquila and its province (Abruzzo, Italy). The sample was subdivided into “urban” and “non-urban” groups, on the basis of the residence of the children, to examine possible differences i…
Height and secular trend in conscripts born in the Central Apennines (Italy), 1865-1972
The results confirm that the mean heights in south-central Italy, including Abruzzo, were lower than those of the more economically advanced regions of northern Italy in each period. The difference has decreased greatly in the last few generations, but the secular trend is continuing in these communities. This seems to be due to prolonged isolation which has retarded economic development and favoured endogamy and genetic drift. However, it has al…
Age at menarche and age of onset of pubertal characteristics in 6–14‐year‐old girls from the Province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo, Italy)
The present study is part of a research project on growth models of children in an area of central‐southern Italy. It analyzes the phases of pubertal breast development (BD) in 397 girls, pubic hair development (PHD) in 399 girls, and menarche in 583 girls from 6–14 years old. The status quo method was used to evaluate the age at menarche. Probit analysis was used to analyze the data for all three variables. The onset of BD and PHD (Tanner stage …
Age of onset of pubertal characteristics in boys aged 6–14 years of the Province of L’Aquila (Abruzzo, Italy)
These results are in line with those for several European and industrialized countries and do not show a significantly earlier onset of sexual maturation
