  • Power, policy, and practice: Political economy perspectives on agroecological transitions

Open Access•Ryan Nehring, Ben Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•Agroecology and Sustainable Food…•2026

Agroecology has emerged globally as a promising alternative to industrialized agriculture, offering pathways toward more sustainable, just, and resilient food systems. Yet despite growing empirical support and increasing policy attention, agroecological transitions remain uneven and contested. This introduction to the Special Collection on “The Political Economy of Agroecological Transitions” provides a rationale for why agroecology as a paradigm…

  • Autonomy-supportive instructional language does not enhance skill acquisition compared to controlling instructional language

Open Access•Laura St Germain, Ben Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2025

  • Reporting bias, not external focus: A robust Bayesian meta-analysis and systematic review of the external focus of attention literature

Ben Mckay, Abbey E Corson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2024

Evidence has ostensibly been accumulating over the past 2 decades suggesting that an external focus on the intended movement effect (e.g., on the golf club during a swing) is superior to an internal focus on body movements (e.g., on your arms during a swing) for skill acquisition. Seven previous meta-studies have all reported evidence of external focus superiority. The most comprehensive of these concluded that an external focus enhances motor sk…

  • Between-rater reliability for using radar technology to quantify maximal horizontal deceleration performance in NCAA division 1 American football and female lacrosse athletes

Open Access•Nicolas M Philipp, Ben Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2024

Our data suggests that if a foundational understanding and agreement of manual data processing procedures for radar-derived data is given between raters, metrics may be interpreted with moderate to excellent levels of confidence. However, when possible, and when using the Stalker ATS radar technology, authors recommend that practitioners use one trained individual to manually process raw data. Ideally, this process should become fully automated, …

  • Exercising choice over feedback schedules during practice is not advantageous for motor learning

Open Access•Laura St Germain, Ben Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2023

  • Testifying after an Investigation: Shaping the Mental Health of Public Safety Personnel

Open Access•Rosemary Ricciardelli, R Nicholas Carleton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

In this editorial, we draw on two Canadian cases to interrogate how mass causality events and investigations consume many responders before (e.g., public safety communicators, detachment service assistants), during (e.g., police, fire, paramedics), and after the incident (e.g., coroners, correctional workers, media coverage). Their well-being may suffer from the associated processes and outcomes. In the current article, we focus on the mass causa…

  • Bolivia's soy complex: The Development of 'Productive Exclusion

Ben Mckay, Ben M Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2016•Cited by: 41•References: 30

A significant transition is underway in Bolivia where both domestic and foreign capital are monopolizing commercial agriculture and leading a highly mechanized, capital-intensive production model which has considerably diminished the need for labour. This paper explores mechanisms and processes of 'productive exclusion' in the soy-producing zones of Santa Cruz in relation to the expansion, concentration and mechanization of the 'soy complex'. We …

  • The political economy of sugarcane flexing: Initial insights from Brazil, Southern Africa and Cambodia

Ben Mckay, Ben M Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2016•Cited by: 38•References: 13

In the context of rising resource demand, agricultural crops such as sugarcane are being promoted for their multiple uses in different commodity markets and as alternatives to fossil fuel equivalents (i.e. as a source of biofuel, bioelectricity and bioplastic). These commodities are also produced on an increasingly flexible basis, as sugarcane mills respond to price signals and switch between different crop uses. This paper offers a preliminary e…

Ben Mckay, Ben M Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2014•Cited by: 64•References: 51

The concept of food sovereignty has been enshrined in the constitutions of a number of countries around the world without any clear consensus around what state-sponsored 'food sovereignty' might entail. At the forefront of this movement are the countries of the so-called 'pink tide' of Latin America - chiefly Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia. This paper examines how state commitments to food sovereignty have been put into practice in these three co…
