Late glacial and Holocene climate and landscape dynamics in the Valdai Highlands (East European Plain) inferred from lake sediment records
The results of a ground-penetrating radar survey and multiproxy studies of the sediment cores collected from two lakes in the Valdai Highlands (East European Plain) provide new insights into the late glacial and Holocene environmental history of the region situated in the marginal zone of the last Scandinavian ice sheet. The cores were analyzed for organic carbon and nitrogen content, as well as for pollen and diatoms. The chronology of the cores…
Preliminary assessment of methane emissions from small Armenian lakes
Introduction. Estimation of methane emission from the lake surface for Caucasus region had been done for the first time. The aim of the study - evaluation of methane (CH4) diffusive flux dynamic from the surface of poorly studied alpine Armenian lakes. Four lakes situated on the Lesser Caucasus had been studied in July-October 2023. Methane flux from lakes was measured by SPD203 gas analyzer of Sanpometer Company with boundary layer method. Porta…
Late Quaternary lake-level changes of Lake El'gygytgyn, NE Siberia
Lake El'gygytgyn is situated in a 3.6 Ma old impact crater in northeastern Siberia. Presented here is a reconstruction of the Quaternary lake-level history as derived from sediment cores from the southern lake shelf. There, a cliff-like bench 10 m below the modern water level has been investigated. Deep-water sediments on the shelf indicate high lake levels during a warm Mid-Pleistocene period. One period with low lake level prior to Marine Oxyge…
Ground ice and slope sediments archiving late Quaternary paleoenvironment and paleoclimate signals at the margins of El'gygytgyn Impact Crater, NE Siberia
An accumulation terrace close to the El'gygytgyn Impact Crater in northeastern Siberia contains stratigraphic and periglacial evidence of the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic history and permafrost dynamics during late Quaternary time. A succession of paleo active-layer deposits that mirror environmental changes records periods favorable for the establishment and growth of ice-wedge polygonal networks and sediment variations. These two elemen…
