Investigating the earliest Bronze Age contacts between Sicily and the Levant
A pottery fragment found in a 14th-century BCE context on the tell of Beirut belongs to a vessel of the Thapsos type imported from Sicily and represents the earliest known Bronze Age Sicilian product that reached the Levantine coast. Employing petrography and neutron activation analysis, we analyzed typological parallels for that vessel from southeastern Sicily in order to determine its exact provenance region. The wider area of Syracuse is known…
The Production and Distribution of Pottery in Mycenaean Thebes, Boeotia
In the course of the project ‘Pottery Production and Distribution of Bronze Age Settlements of Mycenaean Greece and the Aegean’ in 1996, Mycenaean pottery from Boeotia in the Archaeological Museum of Thebes was sampled with a view to investigation by neutron activation analysis (NAA). The NAA results were published and analysed in 2002. Ongoing work with new samples and re-evaluation of pre-existing ones, in both cases deriving from several sites…
Mirroring Mediterraneanization
With a total of 162 samples, one of the most extensive NAA sample series from one single inland settlement in Archaic Sicily is now available to address long debated issues about the impact of the so called ‘Greek Colonization’ on local pottery production. In a previous series, a wide range of wares manufactured on site could be determined, ranging from traditional style incised and stamped vessels via matt painted ceramics of regional style to G…

Pottery Production, Exchange and Consumption in Late Bronze Age Magnesia (Thessaly)
This article presents the results of Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) of, altogether, 145 pottery and clay samples deriving from five sites located in the Thessalian region of Magnesia: Dimini, Nea Ionia, Kastro/Palaia (Volos), Pefkakia and Velestino. Chronologically, the sampled pottery covers the entire Late Bronze Age (LBA), with a few samples dating to the Middle Bronze Age. Within this broad chronological range, Mycenaean-type pottery domin…
Regional and interregional networks of ancient Eleon during the early 12th century BCE as seen from the petrographic and neutron activation analyses of pottery
In this article, we present the results of application of petrographic and neutron activation analyses to a group of pottery fragments dating to the 12th century BCE deriving from ancient Eleon (Boeotia, Greece) as a means of investigating regional and interregional networks in which the site participated. Production centres in Boeotia and central Euboea provided, as could be expected, the majority of sampled pottery across various shapes. A numb…
Production centers of cooking pots in Iron Age Judah
This paper will present and discuss a multifaceted research project dealing with the production of cooking pots during the Iron Age II (ca. 1,000–586 BCE) Judah (modern Israel). In particular the new compositional analysis of 541 cooking vessels from 11 sites in Iron Age Judah will be presented. The study employs petrographic and chemical (NAA) analysis. The results of this ongoing research have already produced interesting information about prod…
Neutron activation analysis in Mediterranean Archaeology
This paper, jointly written by participants of a workshop held in 2021, argues for an increased recognition and application of neutron activation analysis (NAA) in the archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean. Discussing the methodological strengths and challenges, it highlights the great potential NAA has for collecting proxy data from ceramics in order to develop progressive concepts of archaeological research within and beyond the Mediterranea…
A multi-technique approach to characterization
The Sant Genís Formation is located in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula (Catalonia, Spain) and is dated to the Priabonian (upper Eocene), being part of the evaporitic formations of the margin of the Ebro Basin. It is formed by a succession of sandy lutites, occasional limestone layers, marls, and local stratified gypsum and cherts, including the Sant Martí de Tous chert. The Sant Martí de Tous chert type is confirmed by its abundance at specific l…
Regional Lydian pottery at Daskyleion
This paper presents the results of an interdisciplinary study of Lydian pottery excavated at Daskyleion between 1988 and 2002. Before becoming the satrapal centre of Hellespontine Phrygia in the Achaemenid period, to judge by the historical and archaeological evidence, Daskyleion had close interrelations with the Lydian kingdom. Previous stylistic and macroscopic fabric studies of Lydian pottery from Daskyleion have shown that as well as items pr…

Philistine Bichrome pottery is one of the most important, well‐known, and easily identifiable features of the Philistine material culture of the early Iron Age (ca. 1,200–1,000 BCE) in the southern Levant. The Philistines were probably a group of immigrants from the Aegean region and Cyprus arriving at several sites in the southern coastal plains of Palestine. More than 25 years ago, results from Neutron Activation of several Philistine Bichrome …
Interaction and the end of the Late Bronze Age as displayed through neutron activation analysis of Late Helladic sherds
This article discusses the results of neutron activation analysis made on a limited number of LH IIIB and LH IIIC period sherds from the Argive settlement Asine, Greece. The analysis indicates that the transformation from the palatial to the post-palatial period, on a local level of a village as Asine, was not signified by loss of contacts with the surrounding world. Rather continuity and interaction prevailed, although with other geographical ar…
Investigating pottery production and consumption patterns at the Late Mycenaean cemetery of Perati
The Kelenderis pottery workshop(s)
During the Persian (or Achaemenid) period, simply band-painted bowls, plates, jugs, table amphorae and hydriae are documented in the Levant — in particular in the coastal regions — as one of the most common groups of decorated ceramics. Vessels of this style — mostly drinking vessels — were recorded in significant quantities at most coastal sites in southern Turkey, Syria, Israel, Cyprus, and occasionally also in Egypt. The band-painted decoratio…
New Analysis of Cylindrical and Ovoid Jars (‘Archive Jars') From Southern Judea
This paper presents new compositional analysis of 26 fragments of the much‐debated cylindrical and ovoid jars, a vessel type first defined at Khirbet Qumran and associated with the Dead Sea Scrolls. The new samples include 15 examples from Tel Ḥevron, a site which yielded a pottery workshop and that carries certain similarities with Khirbet Qumran during the Early Roman period, as well as several examples from Jericho and Masada. According to the…

The Date and Origin of Black-on-Red Ware
Our study of Black-on-Red sherds found in well-stratified Iron IIA contexts at Megiddo shows that the earliest examples of this ware appear in an early stage of the Late Iron IIA, radiocarbon dated to the late 10th to early ninth century B.C.E. An archaeometric analysis of 10 sherds reveals that they were manufactured in Cyprus, meaning that Black-on-Red vessels were produced on the island as early as ca. 900 B.C.E. This makes Gjerstad's theory r…

Modified Mahalanobis Filters for Grouping Pottery by Chemical Composition
A statistical procedure for grouping pottery in provenance studies by chemical data is presented, which now is routinely in use in our laboratory. It is based on the Mahalanobis filter method and X 2 ‐statistics, and can be used for both establishing groups and assigning single sherds to already known groups, thus replacing principal components analysis or cluster analysis and avoiding their problems in grouping pottery. The new method is able to…

Alterations of Na, K and Rb concentrations in Mycenaean pottery and a proposed explanation using X‐ray diffraction
One of the most important reference groups for Mycenaean pottery is the Mycenae/Berbati (MB). In several studies, a second group has been identified (MBKR). The chemical compositions were similar to MB, but with important differences in the Na, K and Rb contents. The present study suggests that these differences are due to selective alteration and contamination processes that are indirectly determined by the original firing temperature. Therefore…
A Method for Grouping Pottery by Chemical Composition
A new similarity measure is proposed, the ‘dilution factor spread’ or, derived from it, a ‘goodness of fit’ parameter. This has the advantage that raw data without any transformation can be used, diluted samples are recognized and errors of individual concentration values can easily be included. The use of this similarity coefficient in multivariate cluster analyses to construct dendrograms is shown and compared with the use of the well‐known sim…
Analcime Crystallization and Compositional Profiles—comparing Approaches to Detect Post‐depositional Alterations in Archaeological Pottery
The approaches of comparative studies and profile measurements, often used in order to detect post‐depositional alterations of ceramics, have been applied simultaneously to two sets of Roman pottery, both of which include altered individuals. As analytical techniques, Neutron Activation Analysis and X‐Ray Diffraction have been used. Both approaches lead to substantially different results. This shows that they detect different levels of alteration…

Post‐Depositional Elemental Alterations in Pottery
From 38 sherds with ‘corroded’ surfaces, two samples per sherd were examined using Neutron Activation Analysis, one from the surface and one from the core of each sherd, in order to analyse post‐depositional alterations of minor and trace elements. The most striking effect was that a leaching of Ca could be found at the surface. Another group of elements that is severely affected are the alkali metals, with Cs and Rb showing the strongest changes…

The Importance of the ‘Best Relative Fit Factor’ When Evaluating Elemental Concentration Data of Pottery Demonstrated With Mycenaean Sherds From Sinda, Cyprus
Neutron activation analysis of pottery was established at Bonn in 1983 and has since become one of the primary archaeometry‐based analytical techniques at the facility. A brief history of the laboratory and a discussion of the best relative fit procedure for pottery is provided. When comparing concentration data for pottery, a best relative fit should always be considered. This mathematical procedure generally results in ‘sharper’ concentration p…

Provenance Determination of Mycenaean Iiic Vessels From the 1934–1939 Excavations at Tarsus‐gözlükule by Neutron Activation Analysis
Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) has been carried out in order to determine the provenance of a selected set of 30 sherds of Mycenaean style excavated at Tarsus‐Gözlükule. The provenance could be established or made feasible in 80% of the samples. The results confirm the current status of research, namely that in the LH IIIC phase trade patterns changed and Mycenaean wares, which used to be exported to the Near East, were now produced locally. A…
Short Note
The method of chemical provenance determination of pottery is described as a very useful tool, which gives reliable results in most cases, if it is applied correctly and to its full power. Therefore, it is claimed that additional petrographic analysis, the so‐called ‘integrated approach’, should not be considered as a must for each project, but is only needed in cases in which the chemical approach leaves questions to be answered
Mycenaean pottery from the Argolid and Achaia—a mineralogical approach where chemistry leaves unanswered questions
The chemical classification of Mycenaean pottery from the Northern Peloponnese by neutron activation analysis (NAA) resulted in two groups with very similar chemical compositions assigned to production centres in the Argolid and in Achaia, respectively. The statistical separation of these two groups on the basis only of their chemical composition was difficult, and not clear‐cut for all of the examined samples. A complementary mineralogical exami…

Pliocene clays from Aegina (Greece)
Normally, the use of clays as reference materials in chemical provenance studies of ancient ceramics is complicated due to the original clay paste processing. The primary mixing and/or refining of raw materials during pottery production makes a straightforward comparison of archaeological ceramics with extant geological materials difficult if not impossible in many cases. However, in the case of Pliocene clays from Aegina (Greece), which were exa…

History and National Identity
The following observations do not pretend to offer conclusive solutions for the manifold problems arising from the separation of Germany into two sovereign states with antagonistic social systems.1 Nevertheless, some of these problems can be clarified by looking at the current West German debate on the changing state of national unity within a historical and a broadly European context. Historical experience shows that reliable predictions about t…

The Rise and Fall of Weimar Democracy.
Cumulative radicalisation and progressive self-destruction as structural determinants of the Nazi dictatorship
The National Socialist regime is in many respects a peculiar phenomenon which does not fit theories of comparative government. There have been numerous attempts to arrive at a consistent description of the Nazi state, among them Franz Neumann's model of the ‘Behemoth’ state, alluding to Thomas Hobbes, and Ernst Fraenkel's theory of the ‘dual state’, distinguishing between a normative and an arbitrary sector of state power. Both depicted only the …
