Second-Order Group Interest Factors Based On Sex-Balanced Items: Factorial Validity of the Copsystem Occupational Structure
A consistently found structure of eight group factors based on oc cupational activity interest items has been presented (Roe, 1956). The present study was undertaken to determine whether a similar second-order, structure of interests would result from factor analysis based on responses to sex-balanced items. Analysis based on 280 un selected high school students representing various regions through out the country yielded seven clearly defined fa…
Construct Validation of Concepts of Actualizing Measured By the Personal Orientation Dimensions
This investigation was designed to replicate and extend the findings of an earlier study (Knapp and Comrey, 1973) in which scores from the Comrey Personality Scales (CPS), an instrument based on a factorially derived taxonomy of personality, were related to scores of the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) based on a logically developed instrument measuring concepts describing actualizing persons. The present study extends that analysis to the m…
The Relationship of Clustered Interest Measures and Declared College Major: Concurrent Validity of the Copsystem Interest Inventory
The present study was undertaken to determine the relationship between declared major of entering college freshmen and measured interests in terms of clustered occupational activities. The sample consisted of 336 entering college freshmen who took the COPSystem Interest Inventory as part of a college orientation program and who had declared their major. The cluster representing declared major and the peak measured interest clusters were determine…
Personality Growth among Counselor Trainees as Measured by the Personal Orientation Dimensions
This study was designed to examine changes in level of actualizing among counselor trainees at the Master's degree level as measured by the Personality Orientation Dimensions (POD), following the next-to-the-last course in Counseling and Student Personnel Services. Differences between pretest and posttest raw scores were significant for 4 of 13 POD scales. All changes were in the direction of hypothesized greater actualizing. It was concluded tha…
Cross-Cultural Validation of the Effects of Dissimulation On a Measure of Actualizing
A number of studies have presented evidence for the resistance of the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) to deliberate attempts to fake in a positive direction. Notably consistent is the lower Existentiality score obtained under conditions of faking. Although most of these studies have been based on the standard English language edition of the POI, results presented by Steilberg ( 1976) also have suggested the cross-cultural reproducibility of …
Conceptual and Statistical Refinement and Extension of the Measurement of Actualizing Concurrent Validity of the Personal Orientation Dimensions (POD
This study examined the relationship between the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) and the Personal Orientation Dimensions (POD), a refinement and extension of the assessment of concepts of actualizing first measured by the POI. Correlations between conceptually similar scales ranged in magnitude from .50 to .70, coefficients which are held to give further support to the construct validity of scales in the two instruments
Comparative Validity of the Career Ability Placement Survey (Caps) and the General Aptitude Test Battery (Gatb) for Predicting High School Course Marks
Comparative validity data for the Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS) and the General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB) relative to predicting course marks are presented for a sample of ninth grade students. In general, the pattern of correlations between school marks and conceptually similar tests in the CAPS and GATB was highly similar as would be expected. In 23 of the 35 matches involving similar scales within the CAPS and GATB the validity coe…
The Validity of the Personal Orientation Inventory for Measuring the Effects of Training for Therapeutic Practice
The present study examines the effects of training counselors for the core therapeutic conditions of empathy, warmth, and genuineness in terms of increased levels of actualizing as measured by the Personal Orientation Inventory. Findings revealed significant differences between the experimental group and the contrast and control groups on the major Inner Directed scale and significant positive pretest to posttest changes for the experimental grou…
Relationship Between Clinical Ratings and Inventory Measures of Intrapersonal Styles: Validity of the Pair Attraction Inventory
The classification of intrapersonal interaction styles assessed in terms of clinical judgment was compared with assessment based on the Pair Attraction Inventory (PAI). That the degree of agreement was highly significant for five of the seven PAI categories was considered to be evidence for the validity of the Inventory
Assessing the Level of Actualizing of Psychiatric in-Patients: Validity of the Personal Orientation Dimensions
The Personal Orientation Dimensions (POD) (Shostrom, 1975) was administered to 91 psychiatric in-patients to assess their level of actualizing as compared with clinically nominated actualizing and "normal" samples. Results showed that differences between the hospitalized sample and the actualizing sample were significant in the expected direction for 12 of the 13 scales. Differences between the hospitalized sample and the nominated normal sample …
Stability and Concurrent Validity of the Career Ability Placement Survey (Caps) Against the DAT and the Gatb
Test-retest reliability coefficients for the brief Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS) and concurrent validity correlations against the DAT and GATB are presented for samples of ninth and tenth grade students. That reliability coefficients ranged from .70 to .95 is considered to reflect a satisfactory level of reliability for the CAPS. Correlations against conceptually similar tests for the DAT ranged from .47 to .77 and for the GATB from .63 …
Measurement of Personality Change in an Alcoholic Treatment Program: Further Validation of the Personal Orientation Dimensions
This study was designed to examine the validity of the Personal Orientation Dimensions (POD) for measuring changes following an inpatient alcoholic treatment program and to describe these changes in terms of concepts of the actualizing person. Differences between pretest and posttest raw scores were significant for 9 of 13 POD scales. Eight of the changes were in the direction of greater actualizing and one in the direction of greater social conf…
Level of School Counselor Actualizing and Student Perception of Guidance Services: Further Validation of the Personal Orientation Inventory
This study investigated the relationship between level of counselor actualizing and student evaluation of their high school guidance program. The samples included the counselor in each of 23 Ohio high schools who completed Shostrom's (1963) Personal Orientation Inventory and 1,658 of their respective eleventh grade students who completed Wysong's (1971) Guidance Program Evaluation Student Survey. Significant correlations were obtained between stu…
Validation of the Personal Orientation Dimensions: An Inventory for the Dimensions of Actualizing
The Personal Orientation Dimensions (POD) (Shostrom, 1975) has been developed as a refinement and extension of the measurement of concepts of actualizing. Samples nominated as actualizing or as non-actualizing were administered the POD to establish the validity of the instrument for differentiating between such clinically recognized populations. That all scales significantly differentiated these samples thus demonstrated the validity of the POD f…
