  • Comparison of Scales for Recording and Evaluating Dental Arcade Shape

    Christopher Maier, Kelly Heim-Maier et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2023

Recording scales to evaluate the shape of the dental arcade have been proposed; however, no comparison has been made among different scales to assess which is best. Here, a comparison is made among several scales (Gill 1971, 1995; Gill & Rhine 1986; Hefner & Linde 2018; Hooton, The Harvard Blanks n.d.; Maier 2017; Maier et al. 2015), and they were evaluated on (1) low observer error and (2) strong association with groups. Digital photographs of 6…

  • Examining the frequency of crenulated premolars and their association with crenulated molars

    Open Access•Christopher Maier, G R Scott•ARTICLE•HOMO•2021

1238). Crenulations on the molars of the same individuals were also recorded to assess the relationship between occurrences on premolars and molars. Observations were compiled into frequency tables and analyzed using chi-square tests and correspondence analysis; relationships among teeth were quantified with polychoric correlation coefficients. Although crenulated premolars are observed rarely overall, the frequency of occurrence is significantly…

  • Examining Differences in Presumed Migrants from Texas and Arizona Using Cranial and Dental Data

Christopher A Maier, Christopher Maier et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2020

As the result of immigration policies enacted in the 1990s, migrants have been forced to take more dangerous routes into the country, resulting in an increased appearance of presumed migrant remains in the work of forensic anthropologists. Recent research suggests that migrants coming through the Arizona corridor are from different geographic origins than those entering the United States through Texas. Differences among these groups have been ide…

  • Evaluating Mixed-Methods Models for the Estimation of Ancestry from Skeletal Remains

    Christopher Maier•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2019

Many methods of ancestry estimation in forensic anthropology consider only a single type of data, e.g., metric or morphoscopic. These data are typically limited in scope, being derived from only a few skeletal regions-that is, cranium, dentition, or postcranial skeleton-and are not independent variables. Methods of ancestry estimation should incorporate this potential covariation into their estimates.Cranial morphoscopic and dental morphological …
