  • The Texture of Neighborhoods and Disability Among Older Adults

    Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2011•Cited by: 9•References: 11

The use of multiple indicators of neighborhood with good psychometric qualities is critical for advancing knowledge about the mechanisms by which neighborhood characteristics are associated with the health of older people

  • Successful Aging

    Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Gerontologist•2010

PURPOSE: positing that successful aging has independent, yet related, dimensions that are both objective and subjective, we examine how early influences and contemporary characteristics define 4 groups of people. DESIGN AND METHODS: data were gathered from 5,688 persons aged 50-74 years living in New Jersey who participated in telephone interviews. Latent profile analysis defined people who age successfully according to both objective and subject…

    Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2010•Cited by: 16•References: 5

  • Life Events and Interdependent Lives

    Open Access•Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

The central thesis of this article is that a single life event has the capacity to affect and change not one but several lives. This thesis is related to theory on attachment, roles, and convoys. The concept of life-event webs is introduced to capture the complex relations between individuals within networks such as families. Research challenges presented by the life-event web perspective include defining networks, assessing the impact of events …

  • Stability and Change in Patient Preferences and Spouse Substituted Judgments Regarding Dialysis Continuation

    Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2008•Cited by: 1

There is a great deal more stability than change in patient preferences and substituted judgments regarding continuation of dialysis over the course of 1 year. This suggests that if patients have previously expressed preferences it is possible for this to maintain their voice in end-of-life decisions when the patients themselves are unable to express their wishes

  • Psychological Well-Being of Black and White Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren

    Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2002•Cited by: 26•References: 2

A theoretical model predicting the positive and negative affect of caregiving grandmothers was tested with a sample of 867 grandmothers caring for a grandchild in households that did not include either of the grandchild's parents. Results confirm that the principles guiding a two-factor model of psychological well-being operate at the level of subjective role appraisals. Unique predictors of positive and negative affect as well as unique predicto…

  • Behavior Sequences of Long-Term Care Residents and Their Social Partners

Michael S Rose, Rachel Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Differences in the nursing home and assisted living facilities' stated philosophies of care were not manifested in the interactions of their staff and residents

  • Mental Health of Aging Women with Children who are Chronically Disabled

    Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Data were collected from 838 women over age 50 who have either a child with a developmental disability or a child with schizophrenia. Lawton et al.'s (1991) parallel channel hypothesis, which suggests that positive and negative aspects of mental health have differential predictors, was tested. Results indicate that positive caregiving appraisals were predicted by quality of the mother-child relationship, while negative caregiving appraisals were …

  • Mental Health of Coresident Family Caregivers Examination of a Two-Factor Model

    Rachel Pruchno, R A Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1995•Cited by: 4

Data were collected from 140 caregivers of elderly relatives, their husbands, and coresident children. Lawton et al.'s (1991) parallel channel hypothesis, which suggests that positive and negative aspects of mental health have differential predictors, was tested. Data from caregivers, their husbands, and children support the hypothesized model, with greater interdependence of psychological process being associated with greater role centrality
