Still here, still queer? Queer lives and subjectivities in dementia care
This article explores possibilities for the emergence of queer lives and queer subjectivities in dementia care, the meaning of being queer for people living in residential dementia care and how they relate to queer subjectivity. Our study, drawing on qualitative interviews with four people living in dementia care homes, show how being queer was associated with earlier phases of one's life course and youthful, sexually active bodies. The dementia …
Critical Dementia Studies: An Introduction
This book puts the critical into dementia studies. It makes a timely and novel contribution to the field, offering a thought-provoking critique of current thinking and debate on dementia. Collectively the contributions gathered together in this text make a powerful case for a more politically engaged and critical treatment of dementia and the systems and structures that currently govern and frame it.The book is inter-disciplinary and draws togeth…
Daring to Be True and to Shine Brightly in the Time That Remains”: Imagining Transgender Ageing in Fredrik Ekelund’s Q
This article explores imaginings of transgender ageing, and more specifically visions of transfeminine ageing futures, through an analysis of the auto-fictional novel Q by Swedish author Fredrik Ekelund. The novel tells the story of Fredrik, who comes out as transvestite at the age of 60, and subsequently struggles to come to terms with and explore their transfeminine identity as Marisol. Overall, cultural representations of lesbian, gay, bisexua…

Bouncing off Ove: Old men's readings of the novel A Man Called Ove as a cultural representation of ageing masculinity
In recent years, there has been a rise in portrayals of greying protagonists in popular fiction, often featuring older people in humorous and heart-warming stories. An emerging genre within this literature is the "geezer and grump lit", a genre where older people are active protagonists, and while often portrayed as grumpy "'usually turn out to have a heart of gold'" (Swinnen, 2019). A notable example of a book in this genre is the internationall…
“I was the Woman, he was the Man”: Dementia, recognition, recognisability and gendered subjectivity
Subjectivity is a widely explored topic in dementia studies, in both the humanities and the social sciences. Persistent discourses of “a loss of self” in dementia have been challenged by scholars, who argue for the need for continued recognition of the person with dementia and that subjectivity in dementia may be sustained. So far, however, there is a lack of discussion about the significance of gender, and how being recognised as a subject overa…
Regulating, fostering and preserving: The production of sexual normates through cognitive ableism and cognitive othering
People with cognitive disabilities are commonly positioned as risky sexual subjects. This article discusses the discursive production of sexual normates in the form of desirable and normative able-minded sexual subjects, in scientific research on the sexuality and cognitive disabilities of younger and older individuals (in particular those with dementia). We identify three interrelated discourses: regulating sexuality; fostering sexuality; and pr…

Creating safe atmospheres? Children’s experiences of grandparents’ affective and spatial responses to domestic violence
While grandparenting literature has primarily discussed intergenerational relations in families with ‘normal’ everyday problems, such as childcare, it has largely neglected more troublesome issues, such as domestic violence. Based on interviews with ten children and teens, this article explores grandchildren’s experiences of how their grandparents have responded when they were being exposed to violence in the intermediate generation. These respon…
Queering Aging Futures
This paper explores the potential for cultural gerontology to extend its ideas of diversity in aging experiences by opening space to rethink conceptions of successful aging futures. We propose a 'queering' of aging futures that disrupts the ways that expectations of a good later life and happy aging are seen to adhere to some bodies and subjectivities over others. Drawing on feminist, queer, and crip theories, we build on existing critiques of 's…
Love the kin you’re in?”: Kin network responses to women and children experiencing intimate partner violence
Intimate partner violence is often known to a wider social network. Still little research exists on the experiences of social networks, how they respond and how women and children experiencing intimate partner violence perceive these responses. This article draws on 16 qualitative interviews with women victims of intimate partner violence, intimate partner violence-exposed children and their relatives in three kin networks. The overall aim of thi…
In Lust We Trust? Masculinity and Sexual Desire in Later Life
Recent years have seen increasing discussions of sexuality in later life. Today, continued sexual activity is gradually understood as a positive and healthy aspect of aging, in contrast to how aging historically was primarily associated with asexuality. Old men's sexual function, in particular, has been a topic of notable interest to scholars and popular media alike, an interest spurred not least by the market introduction of Viagra and other sex…
Affirmative old age - the ageing body and feminist theories on difference
Discourses on old age and ageing are framed in narrow and binary ways, either as a decline narrative or through discourses of positive and successful ageing. The decline narrative, on the one hand, is highly centred on the decline of the ageing body as frail, leaky and unbounded, and on how old age is characterised by non-productivity, increasing passivity and dependency. Discourses on successful ageing, on the other hand, rely heavily on neo-lib…
Just feeling a naked body close to you: Men, sexuality and intimacy in later life
Despite an increasing emphasis on sexuality as lifelong and part of healthy ageing, the voices of older men and women are seldom heard. Based on qualitative interviews with Swedish heterosexual men aged 67–87, this article discusses how men make sense of later life sexuality through narratives of intimacy. In the interviews, intimacy is described as something more or other than sexual intercourse, involving both touch and feelings of love and clo…
Being there for my grandchild – grandparents' responses to their grandchildren's exposure to domestic violence
Grandparents whose grandchildren are exposed to domestic violence are faced with some unique challenges in their grandparenting, which have thus far been little discussed in research. This paper discusses the narratives of 10 Swedish grandparents whose grandchildren have been exposed to violence towards their mother. The aim was to explore grandparents' narrations of their responses in the face of violence, and their understanding of the role the…
Backward, Dumb, and Violent Hillbillies? Rural Geographies and Intersectional Studies on Intimate Partner Violence
Urban and rural geographies should be further included in feminist intersectional research on intimate partner violence (IPV). The article reviews existing research on the challenges facing rural victims of IPV. This research makes visible the specific problems rurality imposes on victims of IPV. However, research on rural IPV risks being misused and subsequently reinforcing othering and stereotypes of rurality and rural inhabitants. The article …
Bortom ståndet, närmare beröringen: Möten mellan Irigaray och den åldrande manskroppen
This article explores touch and the significance of touch to feminist theorizing and studies of men and masculinities. By combining narratives on touch by old men born between 1922-1942 and Luce Irigaray’s seminal feminist text ”When our lips speak together” the aim of the article is to explore possibilities of rethinking male bodies beyond the phallic body. The article draws on empirical material from a study on sexuality, masculinity and old ag…
Hegemonic Masculinity and Beyond: 40 Years of Research in Sweden
This article discusses the status of the concept of hegemonic masculinity in research on men and boys in Sweden, and how it has been used and developed. Sweden has a relatively long history of public debate, research, and policy intervention in gender issues and gender equality. This has meant, in sheer quantitative terms, a relatively sizeable corpus of work on men, masculinities, and gender relations. There is also a rather wide diversity of ap…
Ancient monuments, mature men and those popping amphetamine: Researching the lives of older men
Research attention on older men and masculinities has been relatively scant. What has been written on older men has, however, often lacked a feminist and critical perspective. This article outlines some of the previous research and suggests a turn to feminist and queer theory to grasp the complexity of older men-s lives more fully. A crucial issue is how old age both may be a source of power for men and may marginalise men. Drawing on interviews …
