  • The Omo-Turkana Basin fossil record as a milestone toward a comprehensive database of the hominin fossil record online

Open Access•Denné N Reed, François Marchal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2026

  • Use-Wear Analysis Shows Changing Handaxe Grip and Use Across Time at la Noira (France)

Open Access•Alice Rodríguez, Emily Coco et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025

Handaxes — sub-oval bifacially flaked stone tools — were produced for over a million years across Africa, Europe, and Asia during the Lower Palaeolithic. Their relatively uniform shape across varied environments and over a million years raises the question of whether or not their function and purposes were also uniform. Previous studies suggested that handaxe shape might be related to patterns in use and maintenance, but the level of analysis may…

  • Characteristics of lithic artifact weathering at the Semizbugu surface site complex in semi-arid Central Kazakhstan

    Open Access•Emily Coco, P Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 73

  • Новые стратифицированные стоянки каменного века Тикенекти-2 и Ынтымак в предгорьях Иле Алатау

Open Access•Abay Namen, Абай Намен et al.•ARTICLE•Kazakhstan Archeology•2024

  • Inter-site and Intra-site Comparison of Recycling in Paleolithic Surface Contexts of Central Kazakhstan

Open Access•Emily Coco, Talgat Mamirov•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024

  • The Effects of Time-Averaging on Archaeological Networks

Open Access•Dries Daems, Emily Coco et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 10

  • Examining recycling behaviors at Semizbugu P1 (2022), Kazakhstan

    Open Access•Emily Coco, Talgat Mamirov•ARTICLE•Kazakhstan Archeology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This article presents the preliminary results of a new project aimed at investigating the behavioural aspects of stone tool reutilisation at the Semizbugu Palaeolithic complex. Monuments with surface artifacts are ideal sites for recycling, as artifacts are easy to locate and reuse on the day surface in such environments. As part of this project, artifacts were analysed at a new site, designated P1 (2022) of the Semizbugu settlement complex, with…

  • Time-dependent taphonomic site loss leads to spatial averaging

Open Access•Emily Coco, Radu Iovita•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2020

Archaeologists typically define cultural areas on the basis of similarities between the types of material culture present in sites. The similarity is assessed in order of discovery, with newer sites being evaluated against older ones. Despite evidence for time-dependent site loss due to taphonomy, little attention has been paid to how this impacts archaeological interpretations about the spatial extents of material culture similarity. This paper …

  • The effects of secondary recycling on the technological character of lithic assemblages

Open Access•Emily Coco, Simon Holdaway et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 52

Recycling of lithic artifacts, including both lithic scavenging and secondary recycling, is a widely recognized phenomenon in the Paleolithic archaeological record, in some instances creating tools with morphological signatures characteristic of multiple time periods or technological systems. These types of tools often define transitional industries including those at the Middle-to-Upper Paleolithic transition, suggesting a variety of behavioral …
