An Index of Real National Growth
In assessing the nature of income-growth, it would be desirable for at least two aspects of the growth process to enter the assessment – those of the ‘size’ of growth, and the ‘equitableness’ with which the growth is distributed across the population under consideration. An index of growth which combines these two indicators of size and equitableness – and preferably in a form that is ‘separable’ in the two indicators – is a summary statistic of …
Growth and inequality in the distribution of India’s consumption expenditure, 1983 to 2009-10
This paper undertakes an assessment of the evolution of inequality in the distribution of consumption expenditure in India over the last quarter-century, from 1983 to 2009-10, employing data available in the quinquennial ‘thick’ surveys of the National Sample Survey Office. Inter-group Disparities in the Distributional Analysis of Human Development
An important feature of most segmented societies is that deprivations and well-being achievements are unequally distributed across well-defined sub-groups of the population, when the latter is partitioned according to a variety of social or geographical categories, such as gender, caste, ethnicity, religion, occupation, sector of origin, or region of domicile. Group disparities are a matter of both instrumental interest in assessing the nature of…

Women's Wellbeing and the Sex Ratio at Birth
A declining sex ratio (SR) for a population has generally been diagnosed as an indicator of worsening female advantage, while a declining sex ratio at birth (SRB) - such as in the context of the Indian population over the recent past - has been diagnosed as being caused largely by the phenomenon of sex-selective foeticide. In this article, we examine the merits of a less sinister hypothesis in terms of which a secular improvement in women's wellb…
