  • My life with primates

    Open Access•Vernon Reynolds•ARTICLE•Primates•2022

In this paper I recall some of the significant moments of my career as a primatologist, including some of the intellectual conflicts I encountered between anthropology, sociology and zoology. From an initial interest in ethics and evolution, I undertook research on rhesus monkeys in captivity and then on chimpanzees in the wild. Influenced by Japanese primatology as well as Western approaches, this led to my work on the problems of describing pri…

  • Possible mineral contributions to the diet and health of wild chimpanzees in three East African forests

    Open Access•Vernon Reynolds, A Pascual-Garrido et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2019

We present new data on the ingestion of minerals from termite mound soil by East African chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii ) living in the Budongo Forest Reserve, Uganda, the Gombe National Park and the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. Termite mound soil is here shown to be a rich source of minerals, containing high concentrations of iron and aluminum. Termite mound soil is not, however, a source of sodium. The concentrations …

  • Flavouring food: The contribution of chimpanzee behaviour to the understanding of Neanderthal calculus composition and plant use in Neanderthal diets

    Open Access•Sabrina Krief, C Daujeard et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 30

In a recent study, Hardy et al. (2012) examined ten samples of dental calculus from five Neanderthal individuals from El Sidrón in northern Spain (occupation dates between 47300 and 50600 BP). In calculus from a young adult, they discovered the presence of compounds (dihydroazulene, chamazulene and methylherniarin) that occur in yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and camomile (Matriarca chamomilla). In preference to other hypotheses, the authors propo…

    Open Access•Nicholas E Newton‐Fisher, M E Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2010•Cited by: 17•References: 86

We analyzed patterns of paternity and male dominance rank in the Sonso community of wild East African chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii ) in the Budongo Forest, Uganda. Our major objective was to determine whether and how social rank influenced paternity success. We successfully genotyped 52 individuals at up to nine microsatellite loci, using DNA extracted from fecal samples. Of 24 offspring analyzed, we identified sires for 21. Pater…

  • The influence of age on fecal steroid hormone levels in male Budongo Forest chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii )

    Open Access•Sally B Seraphin, Patricia L Whitten et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2008

Potential interactions between age and endocrinological functioning have been understudied in wild ape populations. Therefore, we examined the relationship between age and the secretion of androgens and glucocorticoids in 15 juvenile, subadult, and adult male chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii ) free ranging in the Budongo Forest of Uganda. One hundred and nine fecal samples were opportunistically collected, between 07:30 and 13:30 hr, …

    Open Access•A R Brownlow, A J Plumptre et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2001

Data on nesting behavior and nests of the Sonso community of chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii ) living in the Budongo Forest, Uganda, were collected between October 1995 and December 1996. Analysis of the selection of nests shows a preference for particular tree species, especially Cynometra alexandri . Male chimpanzees nested lower than females. Day nests were found to be structurally simpler than night nests and were built in tree s…

  • Fertility and Resources

    Open Access•John Landers, Vernon Reynolds•BOOK•Fertility and Resources•1990

Fertility in animals reflects access to scarce resources, such as food and territory. In humans the situation is more complex. Patterns of breast feeding, contraception and ideas about age at marriage and desired family size all affect fertility. The relation between these and access to scarce resources such as housing and employment, via income, education and other factors that affect status, is explored. In this book, the gap between socio-ecol…

  • Heart-rate variation, age, and behaviour in elderly women

    Open Access•Vernon Reynolds, F H C Marriott et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1989

Minute-by-minute heart-rate recordings over a period of 24 hours were obtained once for each of a group of 29 elderly women, 14 of whom lived in private accommodation, and 15 of whom lived in institutionalized homes for the aged. Activity diaries were kept on the subjects during the measurement period. A comparison of individual 24-hour profiles, diaries, and group averages was made. Strong positive correlations were found in both groups between …

Three problems pertaining to sex and sexes-why sex exists at all, why there should normally be two mating types in a sexual species, and why the two should so often be dimorphic (take the form of male and female)-have created a crisis in evolutionary theory. This paper contains a sketch of these puzzles and some opinions about the direction in which solutions are likely to be found, including a new theory of sex chromosome morphology and activity…

This book, arising from a symposium entitled "Man the Hunter," held at the University of Chicago in April 1966, explores the role of hunting in human evolution. It challenges the then-dominant view of early humans as primarily scavengers, arguing instead that big-game hunting played a crucial role in shaping human social organization, intelligence, and technology. The volume presents ethnographic studies of contemporary hunter-gatherer societies,…

The data reported here are restricted to males. Feelings of boredom were associated with low adrenaline excretion rates. Reported physical tiredness was associated with low adrenaline levels, while mental tiredness seems to be related to high adrenaline levels.…
