Latviešu /v/ un /ʝ
Latvian /v/ and /ʝ/: acoustic study of different realizations The goal of the current study is to register the distribution of different realizations of Latvian consonant phonemes /v/ and /ʝ/ in speech material consisting of symmetric CVC units in carrier phrases. For the acoustic analysis, three acoustic characteristics are used: spectral shape and relative intensity of the consonants in question, as well as relative duration of the formant tran…

For the acoustic analysis, three acoustic characteristics are used: spectral shape and relative intensity of the consonants in question, as well as relative duration of the formant transitions of context vowels. According to the results, fricative…
Acoustic characteristics of the Latvian diphthongs produced by male and female informants
The aim of the present study was finding acoustic characteristics of the Latvian diphthongs irrespective of the speaker’s gender. The method designed by the author allowed to compare diphthongs of different duration, thus revealing common tendencies both in the formant structures and in the diphthong paths on the vowel plane. A comparison of the diphthong paths with the location of the long monophthongs on psychophysical F2′ vs. F1 plane showed t…
Comparative study of the qualitative features of the Lithuanian and Latvian monophthongs
In the present article, a comparative study of the spectral characteristics and distinctive qualitative features of monophthongs of the contemporary Baltic Standard languages pronounced in isolation is described. On the one hand vowels pronounced in isolation do not represent a pronunciation in everyday speech, while on the other hand their production is probably the closest to the acoustic and auditory monophthong targets determined by our menta…
Problems using the traditional acoustic cues for the phonological interpretation of vowels
The need to add acoustic characteristics to description of the Latvian sounds traditionally described and phonologically classified only on the basis of their articulation has raised the question on relations between acoustic properties of sounds and features significant for their perception and classification. Using formant data of Cardinal and IPA vowels and plotting them on two-dimensional acoustic or psycho-physical vowel planes, e. g., F2 vs…
Acoustic characteristics of the Latvian sonorants
The present article describes the spectral characteristics of the Latvian sonorants /m/, /n/ ([n] and [ŋ]), /ɲ/, /l/, /ʎ/ and /r/ as investigated in a pilot-study. The initial sonorant of the symmetric CVC syllables, as well as the formant transitions (CV) underwent spectral analysis. The obtained data suggest that the Latvian laterals are distinguished from the other sounds of Latvian and among themselves mainly on the basis of their formant str…
Runāto un dziedāto latviešu valodas patskaņu [ī], [ā] un [ū] kvalitātes salīdzinājums
THE COMPARISON OF THE QUALITY OF SPOKEN AND SUNG LATVIAN VOWELS [i:], [ɑ:] AND [u:] Numerous studies in phonetics have attempted to investigate the differences between spoken and sung vowels. The majority of these studies dealt with the articulatory and acoustic changes observed in opera singers, however, there were several studies which compared the production of vowels by opera and choir singers. This article presents a pilot study performed on…
