Early phonological and lexical development and otitis media
This diary study describes early phonological and lexical development in a child with chronic otitis media with effusion. Equipped with the tools of a referential/analytic language-learner, the child solved the problem of reduced and fluctuating auditory input with phonological selection and avoidance strategies that capitalized on prosodie cues. This ‘tone-language’ approach resulted in a lexical inventory that would be categorized as an extreme…
Reading-disabled children's conversational participation in dispute episodes with peers
One fertile site for exploring the intersection between language development and social cognition is children's ability to resolve social conflict. This study examined children's conversational participation during dispute episodes that occurred during a group decision-making task with peers. Triads of children in grades 1 and 2 were told to reach a group consenus about their ratings of possible gifts for their class. When disputes occurred, chil…
Phonological constraints on the emergence of two-word utterances
Considerable interest has been generated concerning linguistic and cognitive factors influencing the onset of early combinatorial speech. The present diary study provides evidence that, for some children, the transition between the single-word and two-word stages may be governed by phonological constraints. The presence of a phonological selection strategy and consonant harmony rule in one child's developing phonological system is described. Evid…
