Consonant-vowel interactions in early phonological development
Existing data suggest that consonant and vowel acquisition do not occur independently in young children, but instead interact during a period of normal phonological development. The purpose of this study was to assess consonant-vowel (CV) interactions in meaningful words, in particular to determine if labials were associated with central vowels, alveolars with front vowels, and velars with back vowels. A total of nine normally-developing children…
A quantitative analysis of the single-word stage
A quantitative analysis of the single-word stage was performed by evaluating children's production of words, relative to nonwords, along a monthly developmental continuum. The vocalizations of six children were sampled over a period of one year, spanning the first two years of life. The development of word use was studied by calculating the ratio of words to nonwords in each child's monthly vocalization sample. Results of the analyses indicated t…
Lexical acquisition and acquisition of initial voiceless stops
The interaction between lexical acquisition and acquisition of initial voiceless stops was studied in two normally developing children, aged 1;9 and 1;10, by acoustically examining the token-by-token accuracy of initial voiceless stop targets in different lexical items. Production accuracy was also examined as it related to the frequency of usage of different words, as well as the time when they entered the children's lexicons. Fewer than half of…
