  • Evaluation of antitrypanosomal and anti inflammatory activities of selected Nigerian medicinal plants in mice

Open Access•VO Adelodun, Christianah A Elusiyan et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2013

The extracts of nine selected Nigerian medicinal plants were investigated on Trypanosoma brucei brucei infected mice. The anti-inflammatory properties of hexane fraction of the most promising U. chamae extract was assessed by acute oedema of the mice paw model while the modulatory effect of the extract on Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity (DTH) response on in vivo leucocytes mobilization was evaluated. 'Dose-probing acute toxicity tests' established …

  • Distribution Of Iridiod Glucosides And Anti-Oxidant Compounds In Spathodea Campanulata Parts

Open Access•Christianah A Elusiyan, CA Elusiyan et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2010

The antioxidant principles isolated from the various parts of the plant are verminoside (leaf, stem bark and flowers; EC50 = 2.04 μg/ml), Specioside (flowers; EC50 = 17.44 μg/ml), Kampeferol diglucoside (leaf; EC50 = 8.87 μg/ml) and Caffeic acid (leaf and fruits). The non anti-oxidant components isolated in the study include ajugol (stem bark and fruits) and phytol (leaf). Keywords: Spathodea campanulata, Bignoniaceae, Verminoside, Specioside, Aj…

  • Chemotherapeutic action between Khaya grandifoliola (Welw) CDC steam bark extract and two anti-malarial drugs in mice

Open Access•SO Ijarotimi, JM Agbedahunsi et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2010

In malarial endemic countries especially in the tropics, conventional antimalarial drugs are used with herbal remedies either concurrently or successively. Khaya grandifoliola is one of such popular herbs used in the treatment of malaria.Various doses of ethanol extract of K. grandifoliola stem bark (50-400 mg/kg/day) were administered orally to Swiss albino mice infected with Plasmodium yoelii nigerense. A dose of 100 mg/kg/day of the extract wa…

  • Pharmacological properties of the extract and some isolated compounds of Clausena lansium stem bark: Anti-trichomonal, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects

Open Access•A C Adebajo, AC Adebajo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2009

  • Anti-protozoan activities of Harungana madagascariensis stem bark extract on trichomonads and malaria

    Open Access•E O Iwalewa, Nusrat O Omisore et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2008

  • Mosquito repellent activity of piper guineense and xylopia aethiopica fruits oils on aedes aegypti

Open Access•FB Adewoyin, AB Odaibo et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2006

Repellent activity of Piper guineense and Xylopia aethiopica fruits oils in liquid paraffin were evaluated against adult Aedes aegypti in the laboratory. Results showed that repellency is dependent on both the concentration and time after application. P. guineense and X. aethiopica oils showed complete protection from mosquito bite for 2h at 35%(v/v) and 30% respectively. The activity of eucalyptus oil (positive control), a commercial repellent, …

  • Antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activities of Pentaclethra macrophylla aqueous extracts in mice

Open Access•EO Iwalewa, CC Okorie et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2005

The aqueous leaf, stem – bark, seed and fruit pericarp extracts of Pentaclethra macrophylla were examined for their cytotoxicity, while only the leaves and seeds were tested for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities using in-vivo and in-vitro experimental models. Cytotoxicity haemagglutination assay revealed the following order of toxicity among the plant parts: fruit pericarp > stem - bark > seed > leaf with 71.4, 25.6, 5.3, and 0.5 haemagg…

  • Antitrichomonal activity of 1,3-diaryl-2-propen-1-ones on Trichomonas gallinae

    Open Access•AO Oyedapo, A O Oyedapo et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2004

1,3-diaryl-2-propen-1-ones were synthesized by the Claisen - Schmidt condensation method. T. gallinae parasites isolated from domestic pigeon were cultured in vitro. The in vitro susceptibility of T. gallina was evaluated in multi-well plates at 37oC. Four of the synthetic compounds produced significant antitrichomonal activity against T. gallinae. The minimal lethal concentrations (MLCs) (produced by) 2\'-hydroxy-4- methoxychalcone, 2\'-hydroxy-…
