Covid‐19
The global impact of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been overwhelming, and the public health threat it represents is the most serious seen in a respiratory virus in modern times.1, 2 In every affected country, the disease has impacted the global economy and threatened the health care system with new challenges. In the United States, the outbreak has quickly led to considerable morbidity and mortality, particularly in already fragile rural hea…
Immanuel Kant’s Monograms of the Imagination
John Rundell’s Kant explores the themes of imagination, anthropology and freedom across the entire Kantian corpus. The book casts a revealing light on Kant’s conception of the imagination. It does so in a sustained dialogue with Immanuel Kant’s views on the human condition and political and civil freedom. Rundell explores different approaches that Kant employs to account for the imagination. Rundell’s Kant discusses reproductive, productive, synt…
The Quintessential Conservative Thinker
[Extract] Roger Scruton is the most important conservative thinker of his generation. He was trained in the tradition of analytic philosophy and traces of that formative experience are still evident decades later in his style of argumentation. But the deeper influence on him are centuries of Anglophone conservative social thinking and aesthetic criticism. This intellectual current began with Edmund Burke. It is a particular way of looking at the …
Global Encyclopedia of Public Administration, Public Policy, and Governance
We live in a fast changing and highly complex world in which stability, predictability, order, prosperity, and harmonies are almost equally matched by disorder, conflict, contradictions, unpredictability, chaos, crises, poverty and despair, wars, and threats of catastrophic nuclear annihilation. The shadows of a constant threat of global nuclear annihilation seem to have consciously and unconsciously penetrated into and paralyzed the minds of bil…

The Technical Aspects of Technicality
This article explores the meaning of the word ‘technical’ in the context of rules of evidence and related procedural rules. It concludes that the meaning of the term has been obscured by the tendency of advocates to use it as an umbrella term for a variety of complaints about the application of rules, and as a forensic device for avoiding specificity about those complaints. It concludes that a charge of technicality is generally attributable to t…
Imperial Endgame
It is fairly conventional to say that a book represents a ‘missed opportunity’. Were there, however, to be a special prize awarded in this category, Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon's study of Britain's post-war counterinsurgency campaigns would be a strong contender. There is a desperate need for a calm, scholarly overview of these gruesome conflicts, one that treats them neither simply as an opportunity to expose the iniquities of British imperialism, …
No Free Lunch, No Free Proof
This article suggests that the judicious use of some exclusionary rules of evidence in the common law tradition would make international criminal trials fairer, shorter, and more efficient. The civil law assumptions that rules of evidence (1) are of relevance only to jury trials; and (2) hinder the search for the truth, are incorrect. On the contrary, the present system of ‘free proof’ in the context of international criminal law represents a jud…

Sydney
These three accounts of Australian maritime sites of urban development illustrate major problems of interpretation and action. Is there, as Sophie Watson and Peter Murphy argue, ‘no one representation that can make sense of the complex whole named Sydney'? Or does John Pilger demonstrate one particular representation, apolitical economic one, that makes sense not only of Sydney but also of contemporary developments in Britain and elsewhere? If Pi…

Archaeological Survey of an Intertidal Zone
The intertidal zone provides a wealth of well-preserved information—economic, cultural, and environmental—to supplement the often eroded and weathered record from adjacent dry-land sites. The wide tidal range of estuaries in SE England enables archaeological survey to be conducted below present sea level when the tide is low. Almost constant waterlogging preserves wooden structures and artifacts of wood, organic soil horizons, submerged forests a…

Excavation of two Orcadian burnt mounds at Liddle and Beaquoy
ND 464841; HY 301219. Extensive excavation of two 'burnt mounds' suggests that, in Orkney at least, they are the remains of permanent farming settlements. Both mounds covered traces of substantial stone buildings associated with flat-rimmed ware, hammerstones, stone ard-shares, quernstones and flint implements. Radiocarbon and thermoluminescence analyses gave dates in the range 1300-100 BC. The discussion includes a detailed survey of the evidenc…
