Proto-industrialisation in Norway, 1750–1850
The term ‘proto-industrialisation’ was first applied to the relatively densely populated areas of continental Europe.1 The concept has been refined and developed in the literature following the seminal paper by Mendels, but it is still broadly true to say that the discussion of industrialisation before the factory system2 has been limited to the economies of continental Europe.3

De norske fiskeriers historie 1815–1880
Much has been written about the Norwegian fishing industry and fish trade. This is only proper, as ever since the Middle Ages large numbers of Norwegians owed their livelihood to fishing, while up to the sixteenth century dried fish formed the basis of Norwegian foreign trade. However, this is the first time that fishing is dealt with extensively in a single work, which forms part of a project initiated in 1960 by the History Institute of the Uni…

The Norwegian textile market in the 18th century
The topic of this article is not one that Norwegian historians have discussed before, although students of cultural history have studied textiles from their specialised standpoints. There are three reasons which suggest that the topic may be worth examining. First, it is concerned with the satisfaction of one of the primary needs of human beings: keeping warm. Arising from this, clothing has an important social aspect and is a good index of the p…

English trade in the Baltic about 1685
This book is a valuable addition to European economic history. It discusses little known aspects of international trade and the degree of concentration and specialisation to which it was subjected. It also makes important contributions to the long standing debates regarding the methods of settlement customary in the Baltic and the value of the Sound Toll Registers as sources. The change in the nature of the trade between England and the Baltic is…
The economic background to the union of 1707
The view that Scotland was in a state of economic stagnation in the seventeenth century, particularly in the years between the Restoration and the Union, is one which has long been held. Once economic and political historians have read Dr. Smout's book, however, this view will no doubt be greatly modified1
