  • Fouta-Djallon linguistic ecology

    Open Access•Alexandra Vydrina•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Aims and objectives: The aim is to investigate, at the level of language ideology and language practice, a hybrid type of multilingualism attested in Guinea. Data and analysis: The analysis is based on first-hand fieldwork data (2009–2020). I first analy…

  • Operator focus in discourse and grammar

Alexandra Vydrina•ARTICLE•Journal of African Languages and…•2020

This study investigates how focus on a TAM and polarity value, known in the literature as operator (Dik 1989, Watters 2010) or auxiliary focus (Hyman & Watters 1984), is manifested in natural speech in Kakabe, a Mande language. This study analyzes o…

  • Reported speech in Kakabe

    Tatiana Nikitina, Alexandra Vydrina•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2020

Mainstream approaches to the typology of reported discourse have been based on the notion of a direct-indirect continuum : reported speech constructions are traditionally analyzed as conforming to or deviating from the “ideals” of European direct and indirect speech. This study argues that continuum-based approaches fail to distinguish between two dimensions of variation that are systematically discriminated in a number of African languages and s…

  • Topicality in Sentence Focus utterances

    Open Access•Alexandra Vydrina•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2020

Focus and newness are distinct features. The fact that subconstituents of focus can be given or discourse-old has been pointed out in Selkirk (1984) and Lambrecht (1994) . Nevertheless, when it comes to Sentence Focus, it is still common to equate Focus with newness, and to treat SF sentences as necessarily all-new. One of the reasons for such bias is that formally or typologically oriented descriptions of SF tend to analyze only intransitive ‘ou…
