  • Roman filii familias milites and the Specifics of Their Legal and Property Distinctiveness During the Early Roman Empire

    Open Access•Ireneusz Łuć•ARTICLE•Res Historica•2025

Filii familias, as alieni iuris, were subject to the parental authority (patria potestas) of patres familiarum, i.e. the heads of the household (as sui iuris), and they were deprived of full legal capacity to make property decisions. Under Roman law, they could only benefit from property (bona domestica-peculium) to which their family superiors, i.e. grandparents or fathers, held ownership. However, this such unfavorable situation with regard to …

    Open Access•Ireneusz Łuć•ARTICLE•Vox Patrum•2023

  • Publius Crassus - "optimus adulescens" and his unfortunate career

    Open Access•Ireneusz Łuć•ARTICLE•Klio•2021

In the light of the presented findings, it is clear how briefly Publius Licinius Crassus, the younger son of Marcus Crassus, could not only enjoy the offices granted to him, but also the status of being Kornella’s spouse. As for his career, in total it lasted less than six years when, upon coming of age, he began to exercise his first military command, and two years before his tragic death, he was nominated for civil offices – vide triumwir monet…

  • Bellum desertorum” cesarza Kommodusa

    Open Access•Ireneusz Łuć•ARTICLE•Res Historica•2020

  • Si vis pacem, para bellum - wizja rzymskiej armii i sztuki wojennej w świetle "Epitome rei militaris" Wegecjusza

    Open Access•Ireneusz Łuć•ARTICLE•Vox Patrum•2020

Zacytowana w tytule sentencja "Si vis pacem, para bellum" dobrze pasuje do myśli dzieła Wegecjusza "Epitome rei militaris".

    Open Access•Ireneusz Łuć•ARTICLE•Vox Patrum•2018

The main recipients of the ADLOCVT COH and DECVRSIO sesterces were Roman soldiers. As part of the pay and occasional cash prizes, these coins were offered not only to the Praetorians or the soldiers of cohors Germanorum, but also to the legionnaires, the soldiers of the Auxilia and those who served in the fleet. Money played a vital role in the communication between the emperor and milites Romani. It was through the use of certain types of ideas …

  • Żołnierze "scholae palatinae" – „nowi pretorianie” późnego cesarstwa

    Open Access•Ireneusz Łuć•ARTICLE•Vox Patrum•2016

The scholae palatinae were part of a military guard unit, which was formed as a result of evolution. They developed from a formation of several hundred cavalrymen to a formation of an independent military corps, consisting at first of 3,500, and then as many as 7,000 soldiers. Even though at first scholares seemed different from milites praetoriani (i.a. in terms of ethnic origin, serving as the horsemen), they were, in fact, the successors of t…
