Street Names and Political Regimes in an Andalusian Town
The installation of each of the three socially transformative regimes of twentieth-century Spain (the Second Republic, the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco, and the restoration of democracy following his death) has been marked by sweeping changes in the street names of the Andalusian town of Almonte. This paper considers how the content of these toponymic changes reflects the goals, tactics, ideology, and ethos of each successive regime …
Class, Community, and Costume in an Andalusian Pilgrimage
Of the various styles of clothing worn by the Spanish pilgrims, religious tourists, and spectators who attend the spring pilgrimage to Andalusia's popular Virgin of the Dew (La Virgen del Rocio), two class-coded costumes enjoy a special social and ritual saliency. The first is the traditional festive dress of the region's rural elites ; the second is a stylized version of the everyday clothing worn by male agricultural workers. The contested mean…
Episodes of Accountability in the Teaching of Anthropology
In addition to the many new challenges facing the teachers of anthropology, an old one persists: how are we to deal with those of our students who procrastinate, who do not keep up with their reading and writing assignments in a timely manner? This paper suggests assigning multiple, short oral and written assignments as a general solution to this problem, arguing that this procedure can be followed without a substantial increase in the work of pr…
The Politics of Tumult in Andalusian Ritual
Economic Models of Fertility in Post-war Britain - A Conceptual and Statistical Re-interpretation
The ‘New Home Economics’ theory is described briefly, and Leibenstein's conclusion in 1974 that empirical tests of the model have been unsuccessful is re-assessed and found to be confirmed for the case of some widely cited econometric studies in which macro-level time-series data are used. The pitfalls in formulating, fitting and interpreting such models are examined, and it is argued that the sorts of explanations which have been used to dismiss…

Relative risk estimation from vital statistical data: Validation, a pitfall and an alternative method
A previously described method of obtaining an estimate of relative risk from routinely available data was applied to data on cigarette consumption and lung cancer mortality to test its validity. Some shortcomings of the method were noted and an alternative approach using weighted logistic regression gave results closer to those predicted on the basis of other studies, without the disadvantages of the original technique
Family Life in the Seventeenth Century: The Verneys of Claydon House
Coming of Age in Seville: The Structuring of a Riteless Passage to Manhood
This paper describes and analyzes the riteless passage from childhood to manhood in Barrio Macarena, a working-class neighborhood of Seville, Spain. Beliefs about masculinity, the dependency of children, and the autonomy of men generate conflict between fathers and sons when the latter begin to proclaim their own manliness. This culturally induced conflict underlies the Sevillano view that the father-son relationship develops through three phases…
Emotional confrontations between Sevillano fathers and sons: Cultural Foundations and Social Consequences
This essay examines the linkage between the culture of reputation management, family integration, and features of social organization in a working-class neighborhood of Seville, Spain. Sevillano beliefs about honor and manliness are shown to promote highly emotional disputes between Sevillano fathers and their adolescent sons as the former attempt to control the behavior of the latter. Socially sanctioned father-son avoidance and a preference for…
