Confucius’s Autobiographical Persona in the Analects
This article distinguishes instances in which Confucius in the Analects talks about himself from other statements of his that only appear to be autobiographical. This distinction leads to a more realistic understanding of how the Master was constructed in the text as the supreme teacher of the Confucian tradition.
Towards a Broad Concept of Punctuation
This article proposes a typology of punctuation devices based on functional criteria. It argues that a broad concept of punctuation - including not only non-"alphanumeric" marks but also layout and spacing as well as script features - is needed to do justice to the diversity of material features of manuscripts and their changes over time
Roots of Ru 儒 Ethics in shi 士 Status Anxiety
When originally independent pragmatic texts were included in larger early Chinese compilations, this entailed a recontextualization that potentially transformed the meaning of those texts significantly. Focusing on examples from the Analects and the Zengzi chapters in Da Dai Liji, this paper demonstrates that some didactic precepts which have come to be appreciated as general Ru moral and political philosophy are probably rooted in concrete and m…
Handling a double-edged sword
The present essay discusses rhetorics as an instrument of both persuasion and deception. Early Chinese political thought shows a keen awareness of the deceptive potential immanent in rhetorical skills. Multiple texts warn against certain types of rhetorical behaviour that entail a potential threat to the ruler's control over political power. Yet, at the same time rhetorical skills were also a desirable qualification. While most texts from early C…
The Embodied Text
In The Embodied Text Matthias L. Richter demonstrates how early Chinese manuscript texts can reliably be established on the basis of their material representation rather than on grounds of similarities with other texts
The Embodied Text
In The Embodied Text Matthias L. Richter offers an exemplary study of a 300 BCE Chinese manuscript, exploring significant differences between the Warring States manuscript text and its transmitted early imperial counterparts. These differences reveal the adaptation of the text to a changed political environment as well as general ideological developments. This study further demonstrates how the physical embodiment of the text in the manuscript re…
The Fickle Brush
In the past decade, it seems, the study of early Chinese manuscripts has at last begun to move from its rather marginal position as a highly specialized subject into the mainstream of scholarship on the Warring States and early imperial periods. This is certainly due in part to the impressive quantity of manuscripts found so far. A still more important factor is probably the fact that the manuscripts recovered to date now include a significant nu…
Hamburg Tomb Text Workshop Introduction
