This paper is the first to bring together and present all available data related to the probable season of human occupation of the Upper Palaeolithic Byki sites in the Kursk Seim River area between 22 and 18 thousand calibrated years ago. The objects of study were the cultural layers of the Byki-1, Byki-2, Byki-5 Н.Б.Ахметгалеева, Н.Д.Бурова, Н.Е.Прилепская 20 and Byki-7 sites, and the Penskaya site. Chronology of the Upper Palaeolithic Sites of Byki (Centre of the East European Plain) According to 14C and OSL Dating
Series of 14C dates from cultural layers (CL) of Byki sites are in the range 1—5 thousand years. Simple statistical processing does not allow to narrow down the age estimates. To assess the reliability of 14C dates, we developed an approach based on the assessment of sedimentation dynamics using luminescence (OSL) dating and age determination of the main lithostratigraphic units. The OSL method was used to date the section of the multilayer site …
Multi-scale palaeolandscape reconstruction at the Upper Paleolithic Byki sites, central East European Plain
Animal bones with impact holes from the Upper Paleolithic sites of Byki
The work is focused on the analysis of two holes of impact origin on the tubular bones of ungulates from the Upper Paleolithic sites of Byki on the Seim River. The materials of the sites belong to the Bykovskaya archaeological culture of hunters on ungulates and small fur animals. The dating of the sites is about 20-19 kur BP. A detailed description of the features of the identified holes is given. Assumptions based on traceological analysis of t…

Hunting Projectile Weaponry of Byki Late Upper Paleolithic Sites (Center of Eastern Europe)
The article deals with a specific Late Upper Paleolithic Byki site complex, situated in the Seim river basin, in the center of Eastern Europe. Main feature of Byki 1, 2, 3, 7 (cultural layers I and Ia) sites is presence of geometric microliths (triangles) in their flint assemblages. The sites’ radiocarbon uncalibrated dates are in between 18000 and 16 000 BP. Late Upper Paleolithic human visitors at Byki sites have been not living for a long time…

This site is located on left bank of the Seim River in the Desna basin (Russia). The date of Byki-7(I) was generated through the analysis of horse and reindeer bones by L. Sulerzhitsky : 17000 ± 90 BP. In 2004, the site’s first truly figurative artefact was discovered. The shape of the artef…
