  • Multimodal communication through dance-music synchronization

Open Access•Mohammad Talebi, Alan Cienki et al.•ARTICLE•Research in Dance Education•2026

Narrative dance uses a repertoire of symbolic dance movements and mimetic and abstract expressive gestures accompanied by various musical elements for meaning generation. This study seeks to gain new insight into entrainment or sensorimotor synchronization between dance movements and musical rhythm for meaning generation in classical ballet solo dance through interviews with choreographers, ballet artistic directors, and senior teachers. The resu…

  • Pointes and pulses

Open Access•Mohammad Talebi, Alan Cienki et al.•ARTICLE•Research in Dance Education•2025

This paper employs a literature study, video observation, and interviews with dancers to explore how classical ballet dancers interact and synchronize with musical rhythm in a solo dance to embody the narrative. The result suggests that dancer–music interaction is embedded within a complex dynamic system, in which the interplay between several processing layers, mechanisms, and multiple contexts is decisive. In these processes, dancers integrate …

  • The Ephemeral Materiality of Sound

    Open Access•Vincent Meelberg•CHAPTER•Materials of Culture•2023

By taking the Tasty Chips GR-1 granular synthesizer as a case study, this chapter explores how digital technology has changed the nature of the materiality of sound. Digitisation enables the manipulation of sound in ways that were impossible before, which is done via movements that interact with an interface. In a sense, digital technologies turned sound from an intangible thing into a tangible object, and in doing so, radically changed the mater…

  • The Routledge Companion to Sounding Art

M Cobussen, Vincent Meelberg et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Routledge Companion to Sounding Art•2016

This chapter examines distributed sounding art by focusing on three key aspects that we consider essentially tied to the notion of distribution: assignment, transport and sharing. These aspects aid us in navigating through a number of nodes in a history of sounding art practices where sound becomes assigned, transported and shared between places and people. Sound or data become distributed, and in the process of distribution, meanings become assi…
