    Open Access•Ellen Bouchard Ryan•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 8

This memorial tribute to James J. Bradac draws on lessons friends and colleagues learned through his witness of living well with serious disability. Analysis of published disability narratives provides the basis for identifying how writing for self and others empowers persons with acquired disability. Acquiring a disability can threaten a person's sense of self and ability to communicate effectively with others. Journal writing allows individuals…

  • Evaluations of Overhelping and Underhelping Communication: Do Old Age and Physical Disability Matter

Open Access•Ellen Bouchard Ryan, Ann P Anas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Older adults and persons with disability experience communication predicaments involving inappropriate help. In a retail setting, the authors examined the meanings of overhelping and underhelping and how these may be affected by the recipient's age and (dis)ability status. Young adults ( n= 221) were presented with a picture of either a young or an older target seated in an armchair or a wheelchair. Participants then read three different conversa…

Open Access•Ellen Bouchard Ryan, Mary Lee Hummert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•1995•Cited by: 38•References: 28

Within a communication accommodation framework, this article reviews the emerging literature on patronizing communication directed to older adults in both institutional and community settings. The verbal and nonverbal features of patronizing messages (modifications of communication based on age-based stereotypes of incompetence and dependence) are outlined, with an emphasis on the multiple, often ambiguous meanings of such messages. The authors o…

  • Talk to Elders: Social Structure, Attitudes and Forms of Address

    Open Access•Linda A Wood, Ellen Bouchard Ryan•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•1991•Cited by: 5•References: 17

In the present paper we analyse some of the problems in talk to elders by examining evaluative dimensions of talk in general and of address forms in particular. We first introduce status and solidarity as primary dimensions underlying talk. We briefly review research on attitudes and talk to elders, and develop a framework in terms of status and solidarity for understanding the evaluation of talk to elders. The framework, speech accommodation the…

Open Access•Mark A Stewart, Ellen Bouchard Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•1985

Male speakers of either standard British or standard American English were presented to 60 American undergraduates as either lower-class or middle-class individuals. British speakers were upgraded on status as were middle-class persons whereas main effects in the opposite direction eme…

  • Social Psychological Mechanisms Underlying Native Speaker Evaluations of Non-Native Speech

    Open Access•Ellen Bouchard Ryan•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•1983

Research concerning native speaker reactions to the speech of language learners has generally flowed from an interpersonal perspective (i.e. speaker/listener). On the other hand, the broader social psychological domain of language attitude research has typically been based on an intergroup perspective (i.e. ingroup/outgroup). The two perspectives are elaborated here and shown to provide complementary interpretations of evaluations of non-native s…

  • Alphabetical Seriation as a Reading Readiness Indicator

Keri Weed, Ellen Bouchard Ryan•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1983

Past research has shown seriation in prereaders to be predictive of later reading ability. A new alphabetical seriation task, involving a random set of letters as elements to seriate, was proposed as a better predictor of reading readiness than traditional seriation. Although both tasks require the ordering of discrete elements, alphabetical seriation also presupposes a limited knowledge of linguistic material which adds to its predictive value f…

Undergraduates listened to tape recorded voices of either younger (20-22 years) or older (60-65 years) male speakers who varied in their rate of speech (slow, medium, and fast). The listeners evaluated the speakers on various personality and social characteristics, made causal attributions for success or failure of the speakers in hypothetical situations, estimated speaker ages, and rated the voices on several speech parameters. Overall, faster s…

The nonstandard speech style affected listener evaluations negatively on all measures while social class …

  • Development of Metalinguistic Performance in the Early School Years

    Open Access•Dennis M Scholl, Ellen Bouchard Ryan•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The extent to which children in kindergarten, second, and fourth grade could control their knowledge of syntax was examined in two metalinguistic tasks, judgment and repetition of sentences that varied in grammaticality. The older children produced more accurate judgments, but no age differences were noted for repetitions. Furthermore, unbiased judgment accuracy was correlated with the prereaders' reading readiness scores, providing some evidence…
