Genetic and Socioeconomic Achievement Gaps in Elementary School
Socioeconomic status gaps in academic achievement are well documented. We show that a very similar gap exists with respect to genetic differences measured by a polygenic score for educational attainment. The genetic gap increases during elementary school, but only among low-socioeconomic-status children. Consequently, high-polygenic-score children experience the largest achievement growth over the school years, even if they are born in socioecono…
Associations between common genetic variants and income provide insights about the socio-economic health gradient
We conducted a genome-wide association study on income among individuals of European descent ( N = 668,288) to investigate the relationship between socio-economic status and health disparities. We identified 162 genomic loci associated with a common genetic factor underlying various income measures, all with small effect sizes (the Income Factor). Our polygenic index captures 1–5% of income variance, with only one fourth due to direct genetic eff…
A life course approach to understanding associations between natural environments and mental well-being for the Danish blood donor cohort
Genetic predictors of educational attainment and intelligence test performance predict voter turnout
Although the genetic influence on voter turnout is substantial (typically 40-50%), the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Across the social sciences, research suggests that 'resources for politics' (as indexed notably by educational attainment and intelligence test performance) constitute a central cluster of factors that predict electoral participation. Educational attainment and intelligence test performance are heritable. This suggests that…
Discovery of the first genome-wide significant risk loci for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly heritable childhood behavioral disorder affecting 5% of children and 2.5% of adults. Common genetic variants contribute substantially to ADHD susceptibility, but no variants have been robustly associated with ADHD. We report a genome-wide association meta-analysis of 20,183 individuals diagnosed with ADHD and 35,191 controls that identifies variants surpassing genome-wide significance in…
Identification of common genetic risk variants for autism spectrum disorder
Residential green space in childhood is associated with lower risk of psychiatric disorders from adolescence into adulthood
Urban residence is associated with a higher risk of some psychiatric disorders, but the underlying drivers remain unknown. There is increasing evidence that the level of exposure to natural environments impacts mental health, but few large-scale epidemiological studies have assessed the general existence and importance of such associations. Here, we investigate the prospective association between green space and mental health in the Danish popula…
Genome-wide association analyses identify 44 risk variants and refine the genetic architecture of major depression
Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a complex, heterogeneous behavioural and cognitive syndrome that seems to originate from disruption of brain development caused by genetic or environmental factors, or both. Dysfunction of dopaminergic neurotransmission contributes to the genesis of psychotic symptoms, but evidence also points to a widespread and variable involvement of other brain areas and circuits. Disturbances of synaptic function might underlie abnormalities…
Preconception Maternal Bereavement and Infant and Childhood Mortality
OBJECTIVES: Preconception maternal bereavement may be associated with an increased risk for infant mortality, although these previously reported findings have not been replicated. We sought to examine if the association could be replicated and explore if risk extended into childhood. METHODS: Using a Danish population-based sample of offspring born 1979 to 2009 (N = 1,865,454), we analyzed neonatal (0-28 days), postneonatal infant (29-364 days), …

PP26 Caesarean Delivery and Subsequent Birth Interval, Ectopic Pregnancy, Miscarriage or Stillbirth-a Danish Register-based Cohort Study
Background Despite high caesarean delivery rates worldwide, limited data are available on the effect of a prior caesarean delivery on subsequent fertility. Aim To estimate the time to next birth and the risk of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and stillbirth in women with a prior caesarean delivery compared to women with a prior vaginal delivery. Methods Using Danish registry data we identified a cohort of women giving birth between 1982 and 2010 (…
Childlessness, parental mortality and psychiatric illness
BACKGROUND: Childlessness increases the risk of premature mortality and psychiatric illness. These results might, however, be confounded by factors that affect both the chance of parenthood as well as the risk of premature death and psychiatric illness. METHODS: Using population-based health and social registers, we conducted a follow-up study of 21 276 childless couples in in vitro fertility treatment. RESULTS: The crude death rate ratio in wome…
Prenatal Stress and Risk of Asthma Hospitalization in the Offspring
OBJECTIVE: Recent research suggested that maternal stress and anxiety increase the risk of asthma and eczema in the offspring. In this study, we aimed to study whether maternal exposure to death of a spouse or a child is associated with risk of asthma hospitalization in the offspring using a very large population-based cohort. METHODS: In a cohort of 3.2 million births in Sweden between January 1, 1973, and December 31, 2004, mothers were conside…

Reduced Infant Birthweight Consequent Upon Maternal Exposure to Severe Life Events
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal exposure to severe life events and fetal growth (birthweight and small for gestational age). Stress has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcome. METHODS: Mothers of 1.38 million singleton live births in Denmark between January 1, 1979 and December 31, 2002 were linked to information on their spouses, parents, siblings, and older children. Exposure was defined as death or serious il…
Psychosocial working conditions and the risk of depression and anxiety disorders in the Danish workforce
Psychosocial work exposures related to the risk of depressive and anxiety disorders differ as between the sexes. The pattern of risks is inconsistent. The results give rise to rethinking both study designs and possible causal links between work exposures and mental health
Work related violence and threats and the risk of depression and stress disorders
Objective: To examine the risk of depression and stress related disorders as a function of occupational exposure to violence and threats. Design: Population based nested case-control study. Setting: All gainfully employed Danes. Cases and controls: 14 166 hospital inpatients and outpatients, aged 18–65, treated for affective or stress related disorders during 1995–1998 selected from The Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register and 58 060 cont…
Psychiatric illness, socioeconomic status, and marital status in people committing suicide
Study objective: Suicides cluster in both families and persons with psychiatric disorders and socioeconomic disadvantages. This study compares these factors between suicide cases, their siblings, and population based controls in an attempt to evaluate both the familial and the individual element of these factors. Design: Nested case-control study. Information on causes of death, psychiatric admission, marital status, children, and socioeconomic f…
Hospitalization for Mental Illness among Parents after the Death of a Child
BACKGROUND: The loss of a child is considered one of the most stressful events in the life of a parent. We hypothesized that parental bereavement increases the risk of hospital admission for a psychiatric disorder, especially for affective disorders. METHODS: We studied a cohort of 1,082,503 persons identified from national registers in Denmark who were born between 1952 and 1999 and had at least one child under 18 years of age during the follow-…

Suicide Risk in Relation to Socioeconomic, Demographic, Psychiatric, and Familial Factors
OBJECTIVE: Suicide risk was addressed in relation to the joint effect of factors regarding family structure, socioeconomics, demographics, mental illness, and family history of suicide and mental illness, as well as gender differences in risk factors. METHOD: Data were drawn from four national Danish longitudinal registers. Subjects were all 21,169 persons who committed suicide in 1981-1997 and 423,128 live comparison subjects matched for age, ge…
Gender differences in risk factors for suicide in Denmark
BACKGROUND: Gender is one of the most frequently replicated predictors for suicide. AIMS: To identify risk factors for suicide among males and females and to investigate whether risk factors for suicide differ by gender. METHOD: A time-matched nested case-control design was performed using Danish longitudinal register databases to obtain 811 suicide cases and 79 871 controls. Data were analysed using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: A hi…
Shaftesbury and the Morality of Art Appreciation
The incidence of cancer in schizophrenic patients
A cohort of 6168 schizophrenic patients was followed from 1957 to 1984 to determine the incidence of cancer in these patients. In the male schizophrenic patients the incidence of cancer was found to be significantly reduced in comparison with the general Danish population. This reduction was especially marked for cancer in the respiratory system, cancer of the prostate and cancer of the bladder. In the female patients the overall incidence of can…
