  • The etymology of Mari *jŭmǝ ‘sky; god’

    Open Access•Ante Aikio•ARTICLE•Finnisch-Ugrische Forschungen•2025

This paper seeks to establish a new etymology for the Mari word meaning ‘god’ and ‘sky’: Eastern Mari jumo and Western Mari jǝ̑mǝ̑, reconstructed as Proto-Mari *jŭmǝ. This noun has traditionally been connected to the Finnic word for ‘god’ (Finnish jumala, Estonian jumal, etc.) within a well-established Uralic etymological framework. However, this study challenges the conventional view, arguing instead that Proto-Mari *jŭmǝ originated from Proto-…

  • Are there Proto-Slavic loanwords in Saami

    Open Access•Ante Aikio•ARTICLE•Finnisch-Ugrische Forschungen•2024

There are two nouns in Saami languages for which Proto-Slavic loan etymologies have been proposed: Proto-Saami *multtē ‘soap’ and *kuompe̮r ‘mushroom’, allegedly borrowed from Proto-Slavic *mỳdlo ‘soap’ and *gǫba ‘mushroom, fungus’. Both etymologies are critically analyzed, and in the process, new etymologies for several other Saami words are also proposed. It is suggested that the two Slavic loan etymologies are examples of the largely overlooke…

  • Proto-Uralic

Ante Aikio, Luobbal Sámmol Sámmol Ánte•CHAPTER•Oxford Guide to the Uralic…•2022

The chapter presents an overview of the common protolanguage of all Uralic languages: its phonematics, morphology, morphosyntax, and lexicon. Uralic comparative linguistics is a highly developed field of research, and many aspects of the structure of Proto-Uralic can be reconstructed reasonably well. However, there are still problems and lacunae, owing to the shallow philological record and the highly uneven state of research and description of p…

  • Studies in Uralic Etymology V

    Open Access•Ante Aikio•ARTICLE•Linguistica Uralica•2021

This paper is the fifth part in a series of studies that present additions to the corpus of etymological comparisons between the Uralic languages, drawing data from all the major branches of the language family. It includes both previously unnoticed cognates that can be added to already established Uralic cognate sets, as well as a few completely new reconstructions of Uralic word roots. In this fifth part new Uralic etymologies for ten Permic (K…

  • Loanwords from unattested Nordic source forms in Saami

    Open Access•Ante Aikio•ARTICLE•Finnisch-Ugrische Forschungen•2020

Among the numerous loanwords Saami has adopted from Proto-Norse there are also cases where the loan original has not been retained in modern or historically attested Nordic languages. Such etymologies can nevertheless be established on the basis of surviving cognate forms in other Germanic languages. Seven previously proposed etymologies of this kind are scrutinized, including those for North Saami duodji ‘handicraft’ and ráidalas ‘ladder’. Twelv…

  • The Finnic ‘secondary e-stems’ and Proto-Uralic vocalism

    Open Access•Ante Aikio•ARTICLE•Suomalais-Ugrilaisen Seuran…•2015

It is well-known that in the Finnic languages there is group of Uralic word-roots which appear to have undergone an unexplained vowel shift in the first and second syllables: e.g., Finnish sarvi : sarve- ‘antler’ (

It includes both previously unnoticed cognates that can be added to already established Uralic cognate sets, as well as a few completely new reconstructions of Uralic word roots. • On the reconstruction of Proto-Mari vocalism

Two different theories regarding the Proto-Mari vowel system have been put forward by

  • The Uralic-Yukaghir lexical correspondences

    Open Access•Ante Aikio•ARTICLE•Finnisch-Ugrische Forschungen•2014

The Uralic language family has often been hypothesized to be related to Yukaghir, even though no widely accepted evidence for this theory has been presented so far. The study of Uralic-Yukaghir relations has in part been held back by the scarcity of basic documentary and comparative work on the Yukaghir languages. The publication of A Historical Dictionary of Yukaghir (2006) by Irina Nikolaeva, however, has raised Yukaghir lexicology and historic…

The next section summarises the present knowledge of the stratification of Germanic borrowings in Saami. In the third section 27 Saami words are etymologised as early Germanic loans. The conclud…
