Open Access•Wolverton, Steve Wolverton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2009

The cause of megafaunal extinctions at the end of the last glaciation has been hotly debated during the last few decades, most recently at the global scale. In North America and elsewhere the debate centers on whether or not human hunters, who seemingly first entered the continent during the extinction period, caused the extinctions through over-hunting. An alternative explanation is that climate change during the terminal Pleistocene radically m…

  • The Impact of Race, Physical Attractiveness, and Gender On Education Majors' and Teachers' Perceptions of Student Competence

    Open Access•Felicia R Parks, Janice H Kennedy•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•2007

Stereotypical thinking and prejudgments from teachers have been found to hinder students' academic and social performance. The relationship between students' race, physical attractiveness, gender, and perceived academic and social competence by both undergraduate education majors and practicing teachers was investigated. Participants were 72 individuals (51 teachers, 21 undergraduate education majors) at a midsized university. Participants viewed…

  • Helping Behavior in a Rural and an Urban Setting

    Open Access•Shauna B Wilson, Janice H Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2006

This study assessed differences in helping behavior in a rural versus an urban location when directed toward either a professionally or a casually dressed woman. Convenience samples included 40 men and 40 women (10 people of each sex assigned to each condition: rural and professional, rural and casual, urban and professional, and urban and casual). A 21-yr.-old female confederate dropped an envelope near each target helper individually and record…

  • Father—Child Separation, Retrospective and Current Views of Attachment Relationship with Father, and Self-Esteem in Late Adolescence

    Open Access•Cynthia B McCormick, Janice H Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

Relationships between paternal separation in childhood and adult measures of self-esteem, paternal acceptance and independence-encouragement were investigated with 236 nonparent college students as subjects. Current relationship with father was measured by a modified version of Epstein's Mother-Father-Peer Scale. Self-esteem was measured by Coopersmith's Self-esteem Inventory. Individuals who experienced separation for all reasons from their fath…

  • Strategies for Including Afro-Latin American Culture in the Intermediate Spanish Class

    Janice H Kennedy, James H Kennedy•ARTICLE•Hispania•1987•Cited by: 1

It is a well-known fact that during the intermediate stage of foreign language learning in American schools many students often become bored with and indifferent to their classes. On the college level these students invariably cease the study of French, Spanish, or whatever the language may be as soon as they have fulfilled their foreign language requirement. The motives behind such student indifference toward foreign language classes in the U.S.…

  • Political Liberalization, Black Consciousness, and Recent Afro-Brazilian Literature

    Janice H Kennedy, James H Kennedy•ARTICLE•Phylon (1960•1986

TrHE LITERARY PRODUCTION of Afro-Brazilians is currently on the upswing after having been extremely limited for more than a decade following the revolution of 1964. Indeed, a close examination of the country's literary output of the years 1964 through the first half of 1978 reveals but a handful of published literary works by Brazilians of recognizable African descent. On the other hand, the six-year period beginning at approximately the middle o…

  • Childrearing Attitudes in Appalachia Today

    Open Access•Janice H Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

20 Appalachian mothers reported more enjoyment of child-rearing when their children were small but had unrealistically high expectations of their infants. They were restrictive of their older children's activities. Physical punishment was the primary form of discipline, but reasoning and rewards were used as well. Since only 19% of the mothers invited to participate in the study actually did so, the results may not be representative of the group

  • Colonialism and Literary Production in Guinea-Bissau

    Open Access•Janice H Kennedy, James H Kennedy•ARTICLE•A Current Bibliography on African…•1984•References: 5

The relative dearth of literature in Guinea-Bissau can be linked directly to colonial policies which, for a variety of reasons, never encouraged mass immigration from Europe nor the establishment of Portuguese educational institutions during the five centuries the region was maintained as a colony of Portugal. Furthermore, colonial indigenous policies, the lack of adequate secondary instruction, and a religious factor prevented Africans from acqu…
