Did Diokletia Hvostanska exist? A contribution to the chronology of the life and cult of St. Peter of Koriska
As a starting point, the paper asserts that there was no geographic region called Diokletia Hvostanska (Diokletia of Hvosno), which is mentioned in just two sources ? one from the 15th and another from the 18th century. The root of this misconception is an erroneous reading of a section in Teodosije?s Vita of St. Peter of Korisa, which recounts that the saint was born in the area of Hvosno in Diokletia. Starting from the fact that Hvosno was in D…
The Era of Dušan’s Code
Drawing on the structure and contents of the extant manuscripts of Dušan’s Code, this paper attempts roughly to outline the history of its application and changes from the time of its promulgation in 1349 and revision in 1353–1354, a process that continued to the end of the 18th century. The scarce evidence about the application of the Code has been preserved in some charters issued by the emperors Dušan and Uroš, but since the 15th century the o…
A prolusion on the history of the text of Dusan’s Code
Based on the analysis of the manuscript tradition behind Dusan?s legislation, this prolusion offers arguments in favor of including legal texts copied with Dusan?s Code into a textological examination which aims to reconstruct the history of the Code?s text (the genealogy of its manuscripts) and its original recension. The analysis also includes manuscripts belonging to the so-called incomplete Dusan?s legislation, which contains copies of the ac…
Were king Stefan the First-Crowned and his son Radoslav co-rulers
The Serbian historiography considers the issue of the co-ruling of King Stefan the First-Crowned and his son Radoslav as the one finally resolved. The suggested solution on the co-rule of Stefan and Radoslav may be most succinctly expressed as following: as early as in the year of 1220, due to the frail health of Stefan the First-Crowned and Radoslav's marriage to Anne the Epirus princess, Radoslav was crowned to be the king and positioned to co-…
'Nicolaus Notarius Parserini'
The sources that refer to nomiks, the notaries of medieval Serbia, are scarce. Therefore, any new item of information discovered about them is invaluable. (All the known data about the nomiks and their documents have been collected and analyzed in the study by Dj. Bubalo, The Serbian Nomiks Special Editions of the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Bk. 29, Belgrade 2004) A document in Latin from Kotor (13…
Radosthlabos Sampias - Radoslav Sablja
Several Greek documents from the Archives of the Athonite monastery of St Paul contain information about Radosthlabos Sampias, a Serbian nobleman at the service of the Byzantine Emperors Andronikos IV and John VII. Moreover, a certain Sabyai mentioned in a Turkish document from the same monastery reveal seemingly another reference to Radosthlabos Sampias. Although scholars are agreed on his Serbian origin, they have not shown any interest in the …

Bishop Vlaho or Vlahoepiskop
In three different sources written in Serbian - the inventory of the estates of the monastery of the Holy Virgin in Htetovo as well as in the second and third charter issued by king Dusan to the monastery of Treskavac - there is mention of a church prelate identified as vlahoepiskop. One group of historians interpreted this title as referring to a bishop by the name of Vlaho. On the other hand, historians analysing the clauses of all the charters…
