  • Ethnonyms in the central Balkans in Byzantine historical narratives (late 10th–mid-13th century)

    Open Access•Maja Nikolic, Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2025

This paper focuses on the terminology employed by the Byzantine historians of the late 10th?mid-13th century to denote the Balkans and, respectively, its inhabitants. As the two are closely interconnected and one derives from the other, both issues are comprehensively addressed. Even though the Byzantine historians used ancient terms to refer to the ?new peoples? (i.e., Bulgarians, Serbs, Rus, Pechenegs?) who settled either permanently or tempora…

  • “Something Is Rotten in the State of Denmark” – Diseases of Emperors and Prominent Persons in Byzantine Historical Narratives as an Expression of Turmoil in the Empire

    Open Access•Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Vestnik Volgogradskogo…•2024

The Byzantine emperors and officials suffered from the diseases. Information about them was employed in Byzantine historical texts as a literary motif in order to express corruption of the ruling class in the Empire and criticism of imperial policy. This motif can be dated to the earliest centuries of Christian literature. At that time it was used to illustrate the just punishment of God inflicted upon the persecutors of the Christians. A commonl…

  • Rhetoric in history

    Open Access•Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2024

The paper examines the rhetorical tools employed by the Byzantine historian Nikephoros Gregoras to create a complex and multilayered portrait of the emperor Andronikos II. Writing the historical books dealing with the emperor?s reign spanned several years, in which significant changes occurred within the Empire. The author begins his portrait of Andronikos II at the court of Andronikos III and concludes it, presumably, after the latter?s demise. …

  • Bulgarians, Serbs, and the Rus in the Central Balkans in Byzantine historical narratives (late 10th - mid-13th century)

    Open Access•Maja Nikolic, Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2023

This paper analyzes the information provided in the Byzantine historical narratives composed between the end of the 10th and mid-13th century on Bulgarians, Serbs and the Rus as these peoples permanently settled or just temporarily resided in the area of the Central Balkans. This paper attempts to show how the Byzantine historiography of the mentioned period presented the peoples in question

  • Some Remarks on the Divergences in the Narrative of George Akropolites and Theodore Skoutariotes

    Open Access•Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Vestnik Volgogradskogo…•2020

This paper deals with the differences between the texts of the two main sources for the 13th-century Byzantine history – Χρονικὴ συγγραφή of George Akropolites and Σύνοψις χρονική of Theodore Skoutariotes – who give an account of the events from 1204 to 1261. The Chronicle of Theodore Skoutariotes relies on the historical work of George Akropolites to a great extent, although significant additions to or omissions from Akropolites’ narrative can b…

  • The co-rulership of John V Palaiologos

    Open Access•Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2018

Despite the overall opinion that John V Palaiologos was not a co-ruler while his father, Andronikos III, was alive, this article tends to show that the successor of Andronikos the Younger was bestowed the title of βασιλεύς shortly after his birth. This would, in fact, be a rather logical act of Andronikos III, who, due to his fragile health, sought to secure the throne for his minor offspring. In addition, it seems that it was a practice of the P…

  • The image of Michael VIII in the historical works of the Palaiologan period

    Open Access•Maja Nikolic, Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2017

The present paper tends to examine the image of the founder of the Palaiologan dynasty, Michael VIII(1259-1282), in the historical works written during the reign of the last Byzantine dynasty and after the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. With the analysis of Michael?s coming to the throne and the union of the churches in Lyons in 1274, it looks as if the first ruler of the Palaiologoi was mostly remembered, in historiography and among the most le…

  • Theodore II Lascaris as co-emperor

    Open Access•Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2013

This article consists of two main parts. The first part quotes, once again, relevant sources for Theodore II Lascaris? status as co-emperor and discusses some of Theodore II?s activities as co-ruler. The second part deals with the testimonies of three Byzantine historians: George Acropolites, George Pachymeres and Nikephoros Gregoras, who provide us with different information concerning Theodore II Lascaris as co-emperor. While Acropolites refers…

  • Serbs in the works of Demetrios Cydones

    Open Access•Bojana Pavlovic•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2012

One of the main topics of the works of Cydones is the foreign policy of Byzantium. Mutual incomprehension of Byzantium and the West, the growing threat and fear of the Ottoman Turks, lack of trust and, in a way, animosity towards the neighboring countries (primarily towards Bulgaria and Serbia in the time of Stefan Dusan and his immediate successors), represent three most important factors of that foreign policy in which Cydones also took part. T…
