    Open Access•Maria Starnawska•ARTICLE•Studia Historica Gedanensia•2024

The two medieval patron saints of Poland, St. Adalbert and St. Stanislaus, both suffered martyrdom. The tradition of the life and the martyrdom of St. Adalbert developed from the end of the tenth century until the late Middle Ages. On the contrary, the tradition of St. Stanislaus’s martyrdom arose at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and had a fully developed form. • Blasphemie vor den Toren zur islamischen Welt

    Open Access•Jürgen Sarnowsky, Maria Starnawska•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2024

Blasphemy at the gates to the Islamic World: the legislation of the Hospitallers on Rhodes around 1500 The term ‘blasphemy’ is today used as basis to justify repression and terror. Its roots go back to antiquity. While in the Old Testament everyone who blasphemes God or disregards the divine order is to be punished by death, the medieval concept of blasphemy is wider, including less severe ‘offences by the tongue’ which are prosecuted in differen…

  • Die Johanniter und die weiblichen Orden in Schlesien im Mittelalter

    Open Access•Jürgen Sarnowsky, Maria Starnawska•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2022

The Hospitallers of St. John and the female orders in Silesia in the Middle Ages The networks of the houses of the Hospitallers and of the female monastic orders in Silesia were similar (about 14 houses of the Hospitallers and 13 monasteries of nuns). There were many differences between these groups of clergy, too. The monasteries of nuns belong to various orders (e.g., Benedictines, Cistercian Nuns, Poor Clares, Dominican sisters, Sisters of St.…

  • Sancta obedientia

    Open Access•Jürgen Sarnowsky, Maria Starnawska•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2022

  • Pursuing careers within the Order of St. John, in the Silesian part of its Bohemian priory, as a component of political strategies among the noble families in the region

    Open Access•Jürgen Sarnowsky, Maria Starnawska•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2016

During the 12th and 13th centuries 7 rural commanderies were established in Silesia. These commanderies gradually lost their significance from the 14th century onwards, due to the increasing importance of the urban clerical commanderies which began emerging in Silesia in the 13th century. These rural houses were founded by knightly families of local origin (for example Tyniec Wielki, Maków, Strzegom – a commandery which had a combined rural-urban…

  • Place and Space in Albert of Saxony's Commentaries on the Physics

Open Access•Jürgen Sarnowsky, Maria Starnawska•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•1999

Albert of Saxony, master of Arts at Paris from 1351 until 1361/62, has left two commentaries on the Physics of Aristotle. Since he was well aware of the tradition, his writings may serve for an analysis of the transmision of ideas from the ancient and Arabic philosophers into the fourteenth century. In this paper, this is exemplified by the problems of place and space, especially by those of the definition of place and of the immobility of place,…
