  • Conspiring to Run: Women, their Bodies and Athletics Training

    Open Access•Peter G Mewett, Peter Mewett•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Women's athletics commenced about 60 years after the start of the men's sport. Women's involvement in athletics was held back by the medical and general views that this was a strenuous sport requiring a level of exertion beyond the biological capabilities of female bodies. Their difficult initiation into athletics occurred under male gaze; they encountered opposition from the public, the medical profession and from the male-controlled athletics o…

  • Discourses of Deception: Cheating in Professional Running 1

    Open Access•Peter G Mewett, Peter Mewett•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•2002

Cheating, it is claimed, is anathema to sport. But is this the case? In this paper it is argued that cheating is integral to modern sport, that the model of sport as ‘fair play’ is simply an ideological guise of amateurism. The paper focuses on the sport of professional running which, since its origins in the eighteenth century, has been a gambling sport. Strategies involving cheating to manipulate wins, or losses, have featured in this sport as …

  • Fragments of a Composite Identity: Aspects of Australian Nationalism in a Sports Setting1

    Open Access•Peter G Mewett, Peter Mewett•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•1999•Cited by: 8•References: 12

I argue that it is erroneous to view nations as culturally homogeneous entities. Rather, all nations are riven by multiple divisions. What characterises a nation is that the people constituting it believe that they share a sameness with their co-nationals. So, the idea of cultural homogeneity is a myth that breathes life into nationalism: it is a cohering leitmotiv, a predicate of the 'imagined community' that can be subscribed to in different wa…

Peter G Mewett, Peter Mewett et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•1997•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Professional running, derived from 19th century pedestrianism, is a gambling sport mostly confined to working men. Runners compete for prize money and, particularly, in the hope that they will win races as “dark horses” which should ensure substantial winnings from the betting ring. This sport involves handicapping athletes to level ability differences between them and, in theory, gives each competitor an equal chance of winning. Competitors conc…

  • Setting and situation in migration from the Isle of Lewis

    Peter G Mewett, Peter Mewett•ARTICLE•Ethnos•1988•References: 10

This paper examines migration from the Isle of Lewis (Scotland). Mitchell's concepts of the social setting and the social situation of migration are employed: first, to demonstrate how the economic conditions of peripherality have created the factors, or social setting, promoting extensive out-migration. Second, to demonstrate how the particular circumstances, or social situations, of individuals result in a wide range of types and patterns of mi…
