  • Biological Reality vs. Statistical Artifacts: Why Allometry Cannot Explain Neonatal 2D:4D Dimorphism

Open Access•Baris Özener, Barış Özener et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2026

We would like to thank Dr. Lorenzo Lolli for his interest in our article entitled “The First Allometric Analysis in Newborns Rejects the Allometry Hypothesis for 2D:4D: Strong Developmental Evidence for Prenatal Hormonal Programming” (Özener et al. 2026) and for raising important methodological considerations regarding the use of ratio-based indices and allometric assumptions. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify several points that we believ…

  • The First Allometric Analysis in Newborns Rejects the Allometry Hypothesis for 2D: 4D : Strong Developmental Evidence for Prenatal Hormonal Programming

Open Access•Baris Özener, Barış Özener et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2026

The findings provide evidence for sexual dimorphism in 2D:4D in Turkish neonates. In this respect, the sex difference appears to be independent of the absolute length of the fourth digit, providing developmental evidence that is inconsistent with the allometry hypothesis and supporting the premise that 2D:4D dimorphism is likely related to prenatal hormonal programming rather than simple differential growth

  • The function of love: A signaling-to-alternatives account of the commitment device hypothesis

    Open Access•Benjamin Gelbart, Kathryn V Walter et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 32

  • Associations of Facial Shape With Physical Strength and 2D: 4D in a Turkish Male and Female Sample

Open Access•Fatih Aydık, Berna Ertuğrul et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2024

OBJECTIVE: Human sexual dimorphism in physical strength manifests itself in men having a greater muscle mass than women, reflecting ancestral roles in competition, protection, and provisioning. Prenatal testosterone exposure, approximated via the second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D), is linked to increased muscular strength in both sexes, indicating a developmental influence. Previous research has shown that both physical strength and 2D:4D have …

  • Conservatism Negatively Predicts Creativity: A Study Across 28 Countries

    Open Access•Agata Groyecka-Bernard, P Sorokowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 71

Previous studies have found a negative relationship between creativity and conservatism. However, as these studies were mostly conducted on samples of homogeneous nationality, the generalizability of the effect across different cultures is unknown. We addressed this gap by conducting a study in 28 countries. Based on the notion that attitudes can be shaped by both environmental and ecological factors, we hypothesized that parasite stress can also…

  • No association between developmental instability as a general measure of stress and 2D: 4D digit ratios in a non‐western sample

Open Access•Berna Ertuğrul, Fatih Aydık et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2023

OBJECTIVE: Random deviation from perfect symmetry of organisms is defined as fluctuating asymmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry is widely considered to be a marker of developmental instability, developmental noise and phenotypic quality at the population level. In this study, we investigated hypothesized relationship between 2D:4D digit ratios as a proxy measure of prenatal sex hormones and developmental instability levels in young adult humans. MATERI…

  • Affective Interpersonal Touch in Close Relationships: A Cross-Cultural Perspective

Open Access•Agnieszka Sorokowska, Supreet Saluja et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2021

Interpersonal touch behavior differs across cultures, yet no study to date has systematically tested for cultural variation in affective touch, nor examined the factors that might account for this variability. Here, over 14,000 individuals from 45 countries were asked whether they embraced, stroked, kissed, or hugged their partner, friends, and youngest child during the week preceding the study. We then examined a range of hypothesized individual…

  • Sex Differences in Mate Preferences Across 45 Countries: A Large-Scale Replication

    Open Access•Kathryn V Walter, Daniel Conroy-Beam et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Science•2020

Considerable research has examined human mate preferences across cultures, finding universal sex differences in preferences for attractiveness and resources as well as sources of systematic cultural variation. Two competing perspectives—an evolutionary psychological perspective and a biosocial role perspective—offer alternative explanations for these findings. However, the original data on which each perspective relies are decades old, and the li…

  • Relationship between parental consanguinity and digit ratios (2D: (4D) among Turkish newborns in Sivas

Open Access•Berna Ertuğrul, Barış Özener•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2020

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of parental consanguinity on the 2D:4D digit ratio of newborn infants, whose parents were the first cousins. METHODS: The study included healthy and full-term newborn infants, delivered in a hospital, at the gestational ages from 37 to 41 weeks. A total of 225 newborns and their parents were included in the study. Of these 225 newborns; 100 were inbred and 125 were outbred infants. …

  • Universality of the Triangular Theory of Love: Adaptation and Psychometric Properties of the Triangular Love Scale in 25 Countries

P Sorokowski, Agnieszka Sorokowska et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 15

The Triangular Theory of Love (measured with Sternberg's Triangular Love Scale - STLS) is a prominent theoretical concept in empirical research on love. To expand the culturally homogeneous body of previous psychometric research regarding the STLS, we conducted a large-scale cross-cultural study with the use of this scale. In total, we examined more than 11,000 respondents, but as a result of applied exclusion criteria, the final analyses were ba…

  • Assortative mating and the evolution of desirability covariation

    Open Access•Daniel Conroy-Beam, Daniel Conroy‐Beam et al.•ARTICLE•Evolution and Human Behavior•2019

  • Prenatal exposure to oestrogens estimated by digit ratio (2d/4d) and breast size in young nulliparous women

Open Access•Berna Ertuğrul, Barış Özener et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2019

Digit ratio (2d/4d) in humans is commonly used as a proxy for the exposure to oestrogens and androgens in prenatal life. Masculinisation/feminisation in adults may be also related to digit ratio and therefore to the oestrogen/androgen ratio in prenatal life. It has been shown, for instance, that Waist-to-Hip ratio (WHR) and the amount and distribution of body fat are related to digit ratio in women. A species-specific, sexually dimorphic morpholo…

  • Relationship between shortness of final body height and fluctuating asymmetry in Turkish young males

Open Access•Barış Özener, Berna Ertuğrul•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2010

This finding implies that the stresses causing slower growth in body height might have negative effects also on fluctuating asymmetry
